@calbear2016fall congrats!!! what is you major?
@ct2809 that is what the rep made it seem like. He said they were the only UC that does not select by major. That makes me think they do look out statements and ec’s.
@Solstice1 I havent been checking constantly. Just checked it out today, and saw it. So i might have been in the first batch!!!
@Jesustakethewheel Thank you!! I am a sociology major
@TransferJ @ct2809 My transfer counselor worked at UCSD, in admitting applicants, and from his experience, ucsd only looked at overall GPA, and rarely looked at personal statements. Additionally, I spoke to a rep who confirmed gpa was the main focus, and currently my boyfriend who works at ucsd, has said that from speaking to his students, most say their focus was gpa and many didn’t have extracurricular activities. But, I suppose we’ll all find out soon enough
^ I agree. My counselor said the same thing and ucsd rep.
I met with a UCSD rep at my school, and she said the same thing.
@TransferJ from what the rep I spoke to said, they admit you into the university, and unless you applied to an capped/impacted major, you get into your major.
However, if you applied to an capped/impacted major, you can still be admitted to the university, but are put on a list according to GPA. if you aren’t above the line for the cap for that major they look at your second major choice and if that is also impacted and you don’t get into that one, then you still get accepted to the university, but get in as undeclared… hope that made sense, lol.
Is a 3.6 in Mechanical engineering considered competitive at UCSD
@TransferJ I don’t remember what the GPA cutoff for mechE was, but it was one of the higher in the impacted majors.
What’s the cutoff for sociology? is it competative/impacted? my second choice of majors is anthropology.
@ssm24k I heard in previous years that the sociology major is not impacted, and typically the gpa cutoff for admissions into UCSD is about 3.4 (ish), followed by wait list up to 3.1. I just read this article in the LAtimes how UC, this year, admitted more students than previous years, as funding has gone up. Let’s hope this is good new for us all!
*They refer to freshmen, as the transfer student admission process isn’t complete, but I’m guessing this applies to us transfers too.

Impacted/Capped Majors at UCSD:
Biological Sciences
Economics
Mathematics
Jacobs School of Engineering – all majors in these departments:
Bioengineering
Computer Science and Engineering
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
NanoEngineering
Structural Engineering
If you are not applying to any of the above majors, they could not care less what your major is. Assuming, of course, that there are a plethora of prereqs that you are missing. Some people believe that they don’t even check for prereqs outside of capped majors, but that seems ridiculous on account of the fact that some majors actually cannot be completed a UCSD if the prereqs are not close to complete upon transfer.
For those of you who have been accepted, what college did you get in to? I got Sixth.
@LitMajor1107 I got Muir. I placed it first on the list the UC Application asked for so I’m happy I got in.
How strict is UCSD with major prerequisites? I have Calculus 3 and 4 left as a management science major applicant.
@LitMajor1107 I got Eleanor Roosevelt. ERC requires more extra classes than I’d like. Hopefully, they’ll be worth the extra time required to finish them (If I end up at UCSD).
Hey guys, I so I see that UCSD mostly care about your overall GPA. I have a 3.86 and applied as a General Bio major, do you guys think that’s competitive for that major?
I got Muir which was my first choice! Only two prereqs I think…
@itakenotes If your major isn’t impacted, I don’t think two missing classes would be a big deal. I was missing 3 prereqs but two weren’t offered at a college near me.
@donuts95 I just went through the 2015 transfer thread and tallied up the results from the second batch of decisions.
There wasn’t enough data related specifically to gen. bio; however, this is what i managed to find:
Major GPA AVG.
Human Bio : 3.74 (standard deviation of .2)
Gen Bio : 3.79
Molec. : 3.81
Waitlisted GPA (for biology majors): GPA < 3.6
This isn’t exact, but it’s what i could gather just from that portion of the thread.
@TheDuuuuudeMan Wow nice, thank you for that! From what you posted I think I have a good GPA for my major then.
