@Cheolf Completely unrelated, but “piece of mind” is a hilarious typo for a philosophy major to make.
@goldencub LOL. I noticed it later in the day, but I wasn’t able to edit it. I wanted to make another post pointing to the error, but did not wish to call attention to it. I’m not surprised it was you who discovered it. I was thinking perhaps people would think I made a typo on my GPA and meant 2.90 8-}
Edit: Also on an unrelated note, I was reading the Analects of Confucius this morning and noticed he made many references to the notion of a “superior man”. All I could think of was “übermensch!”.
@Cheolf I find myself disagreeing with Nietzsche more and more, although I do like him. I’m reading Hobbes right now.
Can anyone confirm a piece of information I heard a while back? Is it true that UCSD has a cut-off GPA where they will accept most people with GPA’s above that number (even if they don’t have major prereqs done) assuming they have IGETC completed? I know this isn’t the case for their college of engineering but for other majors?
I would believe it to be true. When I was transferring, I had a very serious and long conversation with a UCSD rep. They got rid of their TAG about two or more years ago, and I asked this lady why they did this: She said it was because they were tired of taking 3.5 GPA’s and denying those who had higher GPA’s, only for the sake of making room for the people who got in on the TAG agreement, just barely making the cut, at that. She also expressed how they were MUCH happier with getting rid of the TAG agreement.
We also talked about GPA’s. She claimed that 3.7-3.5 is the range you want to be in when applying. She claimed that anything below that, your chances decrease dramatically.
Also, UCSD is one of those schools where applicants do not need to complete all of their major prereqs when applying. During my cycle, a friend of mine had a 3.3 transfer GPA, applied as chemistry, had ALL prereqs done and got put on the waitlist as opposed to another classmate of mine who did not even begin organic chemistry (an entire year of chemistry), had a 4.0 GPA and got accepted right in.
So, yeah, I do believe UCSD is all about the GPA.
Well, it is also important to remember that nearly nothing outside of engineering is even remotely impacted at UCSD. I highly doubt they have a formal rule that says 3.6584+ or higher GPA are the cut off. However, if hardly any of your majors are impacted and the assumption is that the GEs will be completed, then GPA is truly the only thing that will matter. Maybe sometimes they will read an essay or two, but, unless the student is missing an unreasonable about of prereqs, the decision would naturally come down to GPA.
Does anybody know how they determine who gets decisions in the first batch?
as far as i’m concerned, engineering majors are among the last batch.
When do people start checking for the housing trick?
Is 3.61 good for UCSD’s econ?
@themightybicycle according to last year, several engineers heard on the first day… specifically structural engineering. I hope structural goes first this time also, haha
@UCSDaaa You’d probably be pretty borderline. Luckily, GPA isn’t the only thing they look at!
how about this GPA for UCSB’s econ&accounting @naregian
@themightybicycle my friend got in as a bio major having never taken a bio class. She just had the math and English requirement for the UC done and she was in. She’s better off. UCSD upper div bio covers a lot of their lower div bio that we didn’t learn at CC.
@IWannaMakeDrugs are you insinuating that she didn’t take any lower division Bio??
Yeah nothing. UCSD admits strictly by GPA.
@IWannaMakeDrugs okay, let’s clarify some things.
If you’re applying to an unimpacted major, your GPA getting into the university is all that matters.
If you’re applying to an IMPACTED major, you better hope you have taken all of your required classes, otherwise your chances get smaller and smaller.
@stevoleeto true to that UCSD likes high gpa students, but it’s unlikely that they made a decision entirely based on gpa. @IWannaMakeDrugs is it possible that your friend had a good profile, with strong ECs? I also know a guy who got into CSE last year without 5 prereqs, but with 4.0 and he founded a very successful startup back in high school and was a ranked athlete on top of that.
I don’t think so. 3.2something, no EC, some AP classes but added up to exactly 60 units. Wait listed then accepted.
Is ucsd still saying mid-march for decisions or has a date been set?
