UCSD financial aide

I applied to UCSD, UCI and UCLA in November and I was wondering if there was anything I can do to increase my chance of receiving financial aide while I await a decision. Are there any scholarships I can apply for? Approximately how much financial aide so you think I will get? And what do you guys think my chances of getting in are?

Mother's salary: $72,000
Father's salary: $100,000+, but he is only paying $7000 max. My parents are divorced and he is saving up to start a new life with his new wife.

If you guys need any more information, let me know.

Your financial aid at a UC will be based on your mom’s salary if you live with your mom.

Since it sounds like her salary exceeds Blue and Gold amounts and likely Cal Grant amounts, you may not get much financial aid.

Does your dad pay your mom any spousal support or any child support for other kids in the family?

Are you a NMSF? (what is that letter you mentioned?)

Did you apply to any financial safety schools? (schools that you know that you can afford).

Unfortunately, you may fall under that unfortunate income range of not qualifying for much aid, but also not being able to afford to pay a lot.

How much can your mom pay towards college?

Outside scholarships are often small and only for freshman year, so you can try to win a few, but that may only help a bit for one year. :(

Did you apply to any schools that would give you a good merit scholarship for your SAT score? You probably should.

What is your major?

Does your dad pay your mom any spousal support or any child support for other kids in the family?
Yes he does but it is barely anything. I’m not sure of the exact amount he pays, but it is for both my sister and myself.

Are you a NMSF? (what is that letter you mentioned?)
No I am not. I received a letter of commendation.

Did you apply to any financial safety schools? (schools that you know that you can afford).
Yes I did. I applied to Rutgers University, which is affordable because I live in New Jersey.

Unfortunately, you may fall under that unfortunate income range of not qualifying for much aid, but also not being able to afford to pay a lot.

How much can your mom pay towards college?
She said that she can pay about half of my tuition at Rutgers, which is roughly $11,000. But she will struggle to do so.

Outside scholarships are often small and only for freshman year, so you can try to win a few, but that may only help a bit for one year.

Did you apply to any schools that would give you a good merit scholarship for your SAT score? You probably should.
I have been accepted to Purdue and Rutgers so I do have backups.

What is your major?
Bioengineering or biomedical engineering depending on which school.

If there is such a thing, I might be able to establish a partial residency. My maternal and paternal grandparents have been permanent residents of California for more than thirty years. Both of my parents, in addition to several aunts, uncles and cousins, are graduates or current students of the UC system.

Thank you for your help! (:

Oh my!!!

I didn’t realize that you’re not a Calif resident.

You can’t claim Calif residency because your grandparents live there or because your parents are grads. you are a resident of New Jersey.

My parents have lived in Calif for over 50 years. I was born in Calif. I am a UC grad. I have a few nieces and nephews in UCs right now. My kids cannot get residency there because of any of that. They are residents of the state that we live in.

Sorry, but you won’t get institutional aid to help you with the costs at a UC . You will be expected to pay all costs.

Purdue isn’t a “back up” because the cost is $40k and you won’t get much of a merit scholarship.

OOS publics don’t give aid to OOS students (except for UVa and UNC-CH)…

You need to find some schools that will give you a full tuition scholarship for your stats. You have missed deadlines for a good number of those assured scholarships, but there may still be some out there.

If you’re OOS, and nothing but a parent currently living in CA will change that, you will get zero aid from a UC unfortunately. And at $50K/ yr, it’s just not worth it.
