UCSD Housing and Bikes

So I've decided on going to UCSD and now my concern is the housing. I DO NOT want a triple. So on my preference should I put single first then the apartments second to insure I do not get placed in a triple? I would like to live in the res halls with the rest of the freshmen but if I put single will they place me in a triple just so I get placed in the res halls?
Or should I put apartment as my first choice?

Also, what kind of bike would you recommend? A 10-speed or a beach cruiser? When I visited I didn't see many beach cruisers, is there a specific reason for that?

you should post in the UCSD forum for more information. [University of California - San Diego - College Confidential](University of California - San Diego - College Confidential Forums)

Not sure about the housing issue, more people can provide advice in the UCSD forum. Regarding a bike its up to you really, but I think the reason that beach cruisers lack (they are definitely there) is the abundance of hills that UCSD has.

Thanks, I was having a hard time finding it and I’ve posted it 3 times now and gotten no responses!

I’m an avid bicyclist, and while I don’t go to UCSD, I’ve visited the campus before.

Considering the landscape, I strongly recommend that you get a road bike. Trust me, it’ll be worth the extra $200; you will need all the gears, and the lighter weight will really help. Either that, or you get a hybrid. If you’re adventurous, you can even consider a fixie, but I recommend against those for safety reasons. Another reason for the road bike is speed; although you won’t be doing 25mph on your first day, you’ll eventually be able to do that. Considering the high speed limits, you really want to minimize the speed difference between your bike and traffic. It’s great that there’s bike lanes, but going 25mph instead of 10mph is a huge difference in terms of safety when you need to make a left turn.
