So UCSD asked me for verification that I didn’t file taxes in 2015 in order for me to recieve financial aid. To verify that I didn’t file taxes, they want me to ask for a tax return from the IRS. (They’ll send back a statement saying they have no record of my taxes, and that’s my proof). I am wondering however, whether they can just use my parent’s tax return as my proof, because they listed me as a dependent. Is this sufficient proof? I really don’t wanna pay the 50 dollars to get the return, it seems like a waste of money. Also it may take up to 60 days for them to process my request. I asked UCSD all of this in an email, they haven’t gotten back to me. Has anyone else gotten a similar request from UCSD?
No, you must provide a statement from the IRS. Failure to do so will mean you will fail verification and aid will be withheld. Apply for the statement asap.
My daughter did as well. You need to apply directly to the IRS for a Verification of Non Filing. You can do it online but if that does not work you will have to send a form 4506T and they will send back a letter stating that you have not filed and then you need to send that to the financial aid office. As previous poster said, if you do not get this in by the May 1st deadline your financial aid will be withdrawn. It takes about a week to 10 days to get the letter back if you are unable to get it online directly from the IRS website, so I would send in the request immediately.
I just recently went through this. I actually received an e-mail back from the financial aid office - thanks to Renee, who literally answered my question via e-mail about fifteen minutes after I sent it. You should be able to have that Non-Filing Form (4506-T) removed from your checklist, as the Department of Education changed their requirements for verification and it’s no longer needed.
Do make sure you get a response for it because that May 1st deadline is approaching and you want that checklist completed before then for the best aid package. You can check to see what’s left to be completed for your financial aid through the “Access Your Financial Aid Status” under the Finances category. Once you’re there, just follow the link for financial aid status, hit select for the 2017-18 year and it’ll show you what’s left to be completed.
