I am thinking about living in UTC in a studio on my own. Anyone have any thoughts or feedback? Is it safe to live alone?

Yeah, pretty safe. Common sense still applies.

UTC is in the middle of a very wealthy area. This is probably one of the safer places to live in San Diego.

I have female friends who live alone in UTC. I don’t believe they’ve had any trouble there or while taking the bus to classes.

Very safe. Love that area!

UTC is as safe as it gets!

San Diego Police have this really awesome crime-map server for public use. Reports are always about 30 days behind, but it’s excellent for getting an idea of the relative safety of an area, or what kind of crimes happen.

[San Diego Regional Crime MAPS](http://mapping.arjis.org/)

For Location, choose “University City” (under the San Diego category) in the “Jurisdiction” window. Then, in the next window, choose “ZIP Codes”. In the third window choose 92121.

Next select some crimes to view, and the default date range, and you’ll be given a map of UCSD and the area around it with plotted events that have been reported to the police during that time frame. Around UCSD it’s mostly traffic citations, with the occasional collision, vehicle break-in, and theft.

Next, re-run your queries on someplace like National City or Barrio Logan, or even the area around SDSU, and compare results. LOL. Enjoy!

is it safe to live alone? are you serious? a thread for this?

Would that single studio also have a kitchen and bath in it? Do any UCSD singles have this?

@quadrapheniamod: I guess not everyone is as tough as you.

Oliver_Twist: ya a studio has a kitchen and a bath and one living/bed room whatever u want to call it. its basically just one room and a kitchen and bathroom.

@uctransferhope: thanks for the answer.

Wow that sounds so nice and convenient, how much are these single studios? Would they be cheaper than traditional single rooms (that are not studios?

Yes! It’s very safe!

I live here in San Diego, and I can tell you a few things:

1) UCSD is next to a freeway called the Interstate 5. The interstate 5 is a coastal freeway that takes you all the way through downtown, through National City and to the border, following the coast the whole way. Right across the street from UCSD on the west side is “Torrey Pines”, a downward slope toward La Jolla largely populated by upscale retirees. This is a very “wealthy” area, where a lot of students tend to travel through to La Jolla Shores or Cove to hang out at the beach.

2) South of UCSD (South-east mostly) directly across campus is the University City area (Nobel Drive, La Jolla Village Drive). Most of the people who live in this area are UCSD undergraduates or graduates, and the remaining aren’t any trouble at all. In fact, throughout the day the only people you see walking around on the streets are usually UCSD students. About 1/4 to 1/2 a mile east on La Jolla Village Drive is UTC (University Town Center) which is a shopping mall. This is probably the place you see in the housing ad you’re looking at. UTC is a smaller mall, but most of the people who work there are students and since it’s close to La Jolla, it’s considered an upscale mall so there aren’t a lot of hoodlums who frequent there.

3) The area around UCSD is incredibly safe. Compared to the other UC campuses, it’s probably one of the safest and most comfortable areas to live in. It comes at a cost, as rent around UCSD is incredibly expensive.

I would say any “ghetto” type of areas are about 10-12 minutes car drive away from UCSD. I would say really far down Miramar Road, there CAN be some weirdo’s, but actually that’s just an industrial area with lots of car shops and Mexican food joints. If you were to head south, you’d have to go all the way to Pacific Beach if you wanted to see weirdo’s. Clairemont Mesa Blvd has some weirdo’s if you head east, but Clairemont police are VERY alert and always driving around. You won’t see weirdo’s until about Diane Street (east of Genesee avenue) up to about where Wal-Mart is near the 805. East of that area you get to Convoy street and there’s not a lot of people walking around in that part of Clairemont because it’s more like a car dealership area.

Overall, it’s easier to point out the parts of San Diego where there IS crime. For example, Logan Heights, Skyline, Imperial Avenue (I got shot at there), South of University Ave near Trojan, Old Chula Vista (Broadway and Moss), Four Corners of Death (Yes there’s a place called this) and that’s about it. Near UCSD, I could fall asleep outside in the grass and feel safe. Hell, when I wake up someone will have probably put a blanket over me!

its not a matter of toughness. its a matter of financial capability compounded with personal responsibility and common sense.

@quadrapheniamod: I think OP was perfectly valid in asking a question about the area surrounding UCSD. So many colleges nationwide are located in crappy neighborhoods (USC comes immediately to mind, Yale is a close second although I hear that they cleaned up New Haven). If I had never been to the San Diego area and were going to consider a move here for school, campus safety would certainly be an issue I’d want take into consideration and research for myself.

Incidentally, the ultimate exercise in personal responsibility and common sense would be to not put oneself into a potentially dangerous situation, such as a notorious neighborhood.

usc is located in a crappy neighborhood…
hmm the social implications of that statement…

Is utc any “safer” than university park?

Not sure what you mean. Crime has always been a problem around USC. What social implications are you reading into my statement?

Or… you can continue to whine about what you consider to be worth posting a thread about. Your pick.

hey sorry to interrupt you guys: does anyone know the answer to my previous question?

How much are these single studios?

What are other UCSD locations that offer single studios besides UTC?

^ use the internet. **** you kids dont know how to search for information.

Back to the convo at hand. Statistics dont answer that question. Statistics dont refleect circumstance. Dont go believing every rap song you hear.
