UCSD Major Dilemma

Hello everyone,

I'm still anxiously & nervously awaiting to hear back from UCSD on getting accepted. I applied as an Ecology, Biodiversity, and Evolution major as my primary & Sociology (Science & Medicine) as my alternate. I am unfortunately missing 3 of the necessary prereqs for my primary major, so I'm very concerned as to getting in with that major. I am only missing 1 prereq for my alternate major but will be completing that course during the summer before I transfer. Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.31
TAG: Long story short, I ended up changing majors after I submitted my TAG (my parents did not approve of me pursuing a BA rather than a BS major) & there was no way of making the corrections to my TAG, so it became invalid :(
Essay: Strong
PreReqs: Missing 3 for primary major/Missing 1 for alternate major

Please let me know if I have a good shot with UCSD. UCLA is my goal school and SD is my backup. I would be severely crushed if both schools denied me of acceptance. I appreciate any feedback & reassurance.

Thanks

UCSD doesnt care about prereqs for your backup major, so if you are accepted based on their gpa/unit cutoff (that is all they look at it) you will atleast get into Sociology.

The cutoff last year was around a 3.2 without TAG. My guess is it will be around a 3.3 this year because of the increase in TAG applicants.

Good luck! (we will all need it)

I don’t see why changing your major will void the TAG. TAG guarantees acceptance to the university but not the major.

TAG guarantees admission regardless of the major? I TAG’d UCSD as a Sociology major but I don’t know if it will help since I made Sociology (Science & Medicine) as my alternate major. I have my fingers crossed & am praying hard that they’ll admit me for the fall :(

“The Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program offers guaranteed admission to UC San Diego for students who complete a core set of courses at a California community college a full term prior to transferring.”

“Admission to a particular major is not guaranteed.”

“Admission to a particular undergraduate college is not guaranteed.”

[Transfer Admission Guarantee: Fall 2012](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/transfers/prep-programs/tag.html)

Where did you hear that changing your major before being accepted would void the TAG? TAG applicants that are denied from their primary and alternate majors will be admitted as undeclared so it doesn’t seem reasonable that your request to change your major would void the TAG.

@ Coolaid: At other UCs the TAG does become invalid if one chooses to change majors at any point in the application process (UCD for example).

For UCSD, I would agree with everyone who posted here: the TAG is not void when you change your major.
I’m not 100% sure, however…

Thanks for clearing that up Deanza. Good thing I didn’t change my major for UC Davis like I did for UCSD. I am going to call UCSD admission to make sure that my TAG won’t be void since I sent in a change of major request. I will let you guys know what the census is.

In case anyone is wondering, I called UCSD admissions and they said the TAG won’t be void if you sent in a change of major request before you were admitted.

We have to send a request to have our major changed? So would I have to send a request for a major change if my major on the uc application for ucsd is different than the major on the tag?

Call ucsd admissions about that. I am not sure. But I would think that you still have to email

Alright, thanks.
