where should I go?
I'm a california girl
tuition is not an issue

UCSD would be my choice. NYU seems to be really bureacratic, and I like big cities, but the cost of living seems pretty oppresive. GWU isn't as prestigious as the others, though it's more known (along with NYU) by the common people. BC is a great school, but it's very different from the others. Much more preppy and a smaller school. What will you major in?

I'm leaning towards UCSD too but have been hearing BC has a better "reputation", so i hear. I will be majoring in political science.

definitely check out, and visit if you can boston college. boston is a great city for college students.

I can't imagine NYU or GWU would meet any California girl's expectation of what a college looks like or feels like. Whereas BC is EXACTLY what most people expect a college to look like and feel like. And with BC now in the ACC, look for its reputation in sports and academics to rise quickly. If you're from California, the whole hey-it's-December-and-I'm-wearing-shorts! thing is probably no big deal to you, so what are you going to get out of UCSD except what's in the classroom? Go to BC and you'll get a feel for the whole East Coast (you'll be in the Boston area, and the NY/NJ folks will talk your ear off about how there's nothing quite like the Big Apple).

i think if money isn't an issue, why not have the real college experiance and move away from the parents, don't be in cali. so scratch out ucsd, i say pick between nyu and bc.

Since money's not an issue, I'd say pick Boston.

Thank you all for your help. One more thing... I'm from northern california (where Stanford is) so UCSD is definitely away from my parents etc. The other thing is that my dad lives in New York City and I also went to boarding school in connecticut for a year--so I have experienced a bit of the East Coast culture as well. Something I'm really curious about is on a nation-wide scale, which school is technically "better". I mean, if you are from the east coast, I'm sure the way UCSD is considered is different than if you are from the west coast. How do the schools compare with reputation and prestige? Which school will help me get better jobs AFTER graduation? These aren't the only things I'm making my decision based on, but I'm curious.

For most people, I think Boston College has better prestige but as for the stats in regards to job placement & etc, check these links out:

(actually, might want to register at campusdirt before clicking)

Boston College
http://www.campusdirt.com/?cmd=mem.school&schoolid=9555&category=gradstats

I'd go to GW, but I think BC is more prestigious and more of what you're probably used to in terms of student body and sprawl of campus if you're from Southern California. As a San Franciscian, I love the city feels of GW and NYU, and think that GW would give you more personal attention and the benefits of Washington DC, which is less overwhelming than New York.

Edit: You're from northern california, so it really depends where you're from how you'd feel about the aesthetic of the BC kids, they can be kind of homogeneus.

bc is ranked somewhat lower than ucsd. also ucsd's poli sci is ranked 7th in the country. i dont believe bc falls in the top 25. if your in state for ucsd why would you go to a lower ranked school, bc, with a lower ranked program in poli sci, and pay far more for it. on the westcoast more people would likely think of ucsd as far more academicly rigorous. the only reason ucsd is not more known on the east coast is it is relatively new compared to other universities ranked as high as it is, and it doesnt have division one sports teams. but in the academic world, i feel ucsd is significantly more respected than bc. i dont even feel academically they are in the same league. but you would likely have a more fun socially at bc, and if thats important that is deff something you should take into account.

for poli sci, go to UCSD then NYU.

i also would choose ucsd and nyu over bc.

the most well known i think throughout united states would be NYU, well at least to the general public it is.

IMHO I think NYU would look much better on a resume than UCSD at the undergrad level. Being a cali native, i just feel that the UC's are a cheap way of getting a good education. UC's don't blow me away. Perhaps because anyone could get in as long as you look good on paper.

does anything know anything really MATERIAL not just word of mouth about UCSD social life? I HEAR it sucks but... maybe someone can tell me/convince me otherwise?

this link might help..,

California actually is in GW's top 6 states representated. So there is a large west coast population.

Definitely UCSD. Here's why:

For political science, UCSD ranked 7th in nation overall, and 3rd among public institutions.
