I got into UCSD and Cal Poly in the major of aerospace engineering.
I know that Cal Poly has a really good aerospace engineering program. And I know that UCSD has good engineering but i am not too sure about aerospace.
I visited both campus. I like them equally, UCSD slightly more. And I like aerospace engineering program at Cal Poly.

May 1st is coming up and I don't know which one to choose.

I must admit, I am biased since I got rejected from Cal Poly SLO for mech. engineering, but got accepted (and I will be attending) UCSD for the same major…

I can’t comment on which program is better, but I do know something that UCSD offers that is pretty cool:

If you have a 3.5 or higher upper division GPA, your senior year, you take grad school classes instead of technical electives. If you get B-'s or above in those classes (and still have an overall GPA of 3.5 or above) after you get your BS, you go straight on to get a MS.

You have the option between two great schools. I’m not sure there is a wrong choice here.

This program is currently under review and we expect major changes for Fall 2009 BS/MS admits. In the meantime, we advise prospective students to consider the regular MS program. For further information, please contact the MAE Student Affairs Manager, Linda McKamey, at lmckamey@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-4065. Students already admitted into the program can continue to follow the policies in place below.

I wonder if you’re still allowed to do this next year.

currently under review could also mean currently under consideration to be canceled, but also could mean consideration toward changing the requirements or other parts of the program.

I’m hoping to apply into this program come next year…

Both schools have very high class programs. I know Boeing recruits heavily from Cal Poly SLO (not saying they don’t recruit from UCSD, just saying I know they recruit from SLO).

I have no idea which school would be considered better to be a graduate from.

honestly, both the programs are so respectable, that you will have to make your decision on something besides the quality of the aerospace program.

Is living in a college town important to you? Or would you rather live near a major city with a lot going on apart from the University?

Are you ok with being at risk for graduating late due to classes being canceled? (a problem at the CSUs right now)

Which campus do you like better?

I don’t think there is a wrong choice to make here with respect to the quality of the programs. They both are very very good. You will have to make your decision on a different criteria.

Personally I haven’t heard of this on my end of the spectrum as a UCSD student. Most of the budget crunching is affecting admissions of the new class along with the number of teachers accorded to each class. The variety isn’t going to be affected because that would have a disastrous effect on certain majors now wouldn’t it?

An example of what I think the budget crunch caused: My BILD3 class got moved out of Warren Lecture Hall 2001 to Price Center Theater because they upped the enrollment number for it from 400 to 475. I thought of it as a good thing because my class right after is a music class in WLH 2001. Sitting in the same place for 3 hours might just kinda suck.
