Hi everyone i am not sure whether to go to UCSD or SLO. I want a career in business and am planning to get a MBA but the only business program i got accepted to was SLOs. The major i put for UCSD is Mechanical engineering which i am somewhat interested in. I am not certain if i will stick to that major. I have heard that you do not need to major in business in an undergraduate school to get an MBA and was wondering if you guys had any input on what i should do or where i should go. I heard the engineering program at SLO is outstanding and if i were to do engineering would it be better at SLO or SD? I am also paying less to attend SD than SLO by $2000. Thanks everyone =]

you are right in that you do not need to major in business to get an MBA. you can go to business school with any major. ucsd does not have a business major, but you can take some undergraduate business classes at the rady school of management.
cal poly does have a great engineering program, but ucsd’s is ranked higher.

in the end, you should really go where you feel most comfortable. i know a girl who chose cal poly engineering over ucsd engineering just because she liked the vibe of the school better, so imo one of the biggest factors is simply where you can see yourself best. good luck!

My friend told me that there is a major called managerial sciences which is somwhat similar to a business major. do you know anything about this major?

Management Science is Rad, its similar to Econ, look at the college coursebook for major requirements. Though your going to have to take the engineering calculus which is really not that bad…

Oh yeah one thing I think I should let you know is that I heard from my friend from SLO that it is notoriously hard to switch majors at SLO, especially something impacted like engineering. So I’m assuming you got into SLO as a business major? If you change your mind to engineering, it’d be quite a difficult switch. It’s pretty easy to switch at ucsd if your desired major isn’t impacted, so if you decide to switch from engineering (impacted) to management science (closest thing to business i guess, not impacted) it’d probably be easier, and you could always just take business classes as an engineering major or if you’re amazing double major, which I heard is really hard with engineering do to the load of classes they take, everything has to be planned well early on as an engineer major or lot of IB/AP/CC creds/summer school to even graduate in 4 yrs.

I would choose UCSD over SLO. First off, the prices at SLO are increases dramatically. The dean of the school (or ex dean I should say) has been getting a raise every year for the past 4 years, while tuition has increased dramatically.

Tuition aside, UCSD is also much more respected in the business world. If you do still want to get an MBA I would recommend going to UCSD for mechanical engineering, then getting your MBA. THis way you are more diversified. Having both a bachelors in business and an MBA is rather… pointless… Having a bachelors in mechanical engineering and an MBA opens a wider world of possibilities concerning your career. Hope this helped :)

@funnyorCPA:

UCSD is much more respected in the business world??? Tell that to the guy working at OVT after graduating from UCSD with a degree in Economics.

Suggest ignoring @funnyorCPA for advice dealing with Cal Poly - based on posts on other threads s/he has issues with the school. Plus, many comments are ignorant (see other posts in this thread). For example, ALL CA public schools are being faced with increased fees - not just Cal Poly and cost to attend Cal Poly is currently about half that of UCSD (tuition, housing, etc.).

Having said that UCSD is a great school, my D is also considering it for engineering - but is currently leaning towards SLO.

If you want a career in business, Cal Poly is a great option. Some of their accolades are here: [Cal Poly: National Honors, Ranking and Recognition - A Constantly Growing List](http://www.calpolynews.calpoly.edu/rankings.html)

There are also some great posts about the B-school on the Cal Poly site.

But a technical degree with a business degree can give you many options.

Cal Poly is a great business school while UCSD doesn’t have one. But either way, my advice is to go somewhere you feel comfortable. I have a friend going to SLO and he’s not liking the atmosphere too much. If you’re from SoCal, i would definitely visit SLO first before choosing to attend there. It is a great school though, especially for business and engineering.
