UCSD or NYU?

Hey all-
I'm currently attending UCSD, but have found that La Jolla really, really, really sucks, and the vast majority of the students at the school lack any sense of ambition or direction. Kind of a let down, to say the least. I was accepted at NYU Fall of '05, but chose the UC. Now, I'm applying for transfer admission this upcoming Spring 2007. I'm not exactly telling any of my immediate family, in fear that they might attempt to talk me out of it- again. Anyway, for those of you at either school, or just as an outsider in the whole matter, what do you think of the potential move from California to NYC for me? If it matters at all, I'm an art major. Just looking for some biased and unbiased input....

Fionn

UCSD is academically a better school, however for an art major i would think NYU would be stronger. overall, UCSD is ranked a bit higher and if you are instate would be significantly less money. i would stick with UCSD unless you have a specific reason to change that is worth the money to go to NYU.

I know... I've been struggling with that. But I'm one of those obscure, impractical majors (as I've been told). I'm doing Art History, and I'm pretty sure NYU has the best department in the country. And you really can't beat the Met... I want smaller classes, too. UCSD favors all of the science and engineering departments to a rediculous extent. I don't see myself getting to far there... at least not in art. Agh. It's frustrating. I don't know what I'll do.

Both are excellent institutions. Im sure no matter what you choose, youll do fine. Both UCSD and NYU degrees will open up doors for you. Best of luck choosing!

If money is going to be an issue, stay where you are because NYU gives very little aid for transfer students so you will have major debt.

Yeah, it'll cost me around 40,000 for NYU 'cause I'm out of state. They give me about half of that, but the other half would be loans. I think that's one of the major reasons my parents didn't want me to go, but it'll be me paying it off. I don't know. I'm starting to think the experience alone might be worth it.

It'll cost you close to 50K including room and board because there has been a tuition hike and NYU is a private school so it does not matter if you are instate or out of state.

In addition expect to get less money as a transfer student than you would have gotten as an incoming freshman. It is going to hard to hide this from your family as you will not be able to get anything other than stafford loans with out them either taking out a plus loan or co-signing for your loans.

Why don't you look into other UCs? Don't UCLA, UCSB and UCD have stronger
art departments than UCSD?

NYU....no contest. La Jolla is a boring suburb and I ABHOR the SoCal car fetish. New York City just simply trumps San Diego, LA and La Jolla in any way, shape and form.

Hardly "no contest." As has been stated before, if OP decided to transfer, it would cost an enormous amount.
I personally doubt the difference between NYU and UCSD is worth that much.

its a matter of preference. i think naturally those who go to nyu expect a lot more in terms of student outlook since life in new york is so much more fast paced and goal driven. i never like SD myself and im sure its not the greatest environment for an art major but its a quality school. i wouldnt worry about where you get the degree from, what are you looking to do after college? nyc is full of yuppie intellectual types who crave the fast paced lifestyle and so called creativity that comes from living in such an environment. i know most of the eastcoast doesnt take CA seriously in terms of artistic creation or corporate drive. i shoot for UCB if you have degree. if you cant facilitate notions of ambition and determination and creative exercise in the Bay Area, especially Berkeley i dunno what to suggest. SoCal is a dumb and everyone is egotistical, self centered, and yes car OBSESSED.

AGREED!!!!! OMG I COULD NOT AGREE MORE WITH THAT. Anyway yeah it's also conceited, rich, pretentious, and it's an impersonation of the OC.
