UCSD or UCI (econ major w/ minor in business)

I’m completely split on this decision. Both universities are offering me the same amount of scholarships.

UCSD (John Muir- economics or management science major)

 • fewer GEs, probably graduate in 4 years

UCI (Mesa Court/Middle Earth- economics or political science major, business management minor)

 • probably graduate in 4/5 years (?)

UCSD is a slightly higher ranked school and probably more competitive. If I’m planning on receiving my MBA in the future, would undergrad GPA or the prestige of the school be more important?

The housing, environment, etc. definitely play a factor in my decision. Any feedback about the schools overall would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I was in the same situation... except UCSD (Muir) offered me $8,000 more than UCI . So SD offered me 16,000 and I offered me 8,000. Guess which one I chose? WRONG! I sent in my SIR to Irvine a week ago. La Jolla isn't the right environment for me. Irvine keeps getting better every year and is right under SD in rankings. Also, Irvine is planing to start a Law School in the near future :-), SD has no similar plans. Irvine also has a medical school and is a strong university. Eventually, I think Irvine will beat SD. Once I visited Irvine, I knew I was gonna attend. There's just something about the campus... Oh yeah! It helps that there's a giant park in the middle of the school :-). Me likes the trees.

well UCSD is expanding their RADY school of managment and ive heard rumors that they will be offering 5 year MBA programs to undergrads. And I dunno about everyone else but I agree that Irvine is a really great school, but UCSD has been rising in the ranking every year just liek every UC and I dont forsee irvine beating SD, at least for a very long time. Also UCSD does have a medical school and it has a university hospital. Not to mention they have a pharmacuetical school and they were ranked 11 for graduate engineering, above UCLA, by usnews.

the Rady school of management is a new establishment that started last year and within the 4 years that you would be there they are definitely going to expand it, since the favorability of MBA's has gone up, they will definitely want to expand this program.

ps UCSD econ was ranked 10 in the nation, 2nd among public universities. (I believe for graduate)

I think you should visit both schools. UCSD is a much prettier campus right by the ocean.

Although I would give the edge to UCSD in terms of rank and general environs, I think that amiradaprincess's post indicates the importance of actually visiting the campuses and see what fits best for you.

amiradaprincess didn't you also say in another post that you are planning to live at home, so Irvine is a better deal financially for you?

ucsd for sure.... better school...better at placing you into a grad program... more prestigious... uci wont be beating ucsd for a very very very long time, most likely never, in rankings. if you got the same amount of funding at each school ucsd is the clear choice unless their is something specific you really like about uci.

collegemom- why are you stalking me... 40 year-old women should have better things to do than go to this site....

SD is a great school... but once again... the obvious choice may not be right for you. Don't let a middle-aged woman influence you. Six months ago... if you told me that I was gonna get into SD... I would not have believed you... I would have told you that i'm going there 100%. Once you get accepted though... you need to look past the initial thrill and see what's best for you. Even though SD gave me more money... I realized that Irvine would be less of a burden. I would have more options for living (with parents, move out, or on campus)... I would be close to those that I love.... still close to the beach and Disneyland... and i'm still getting a -dare I say- equal education. I'm not gonna attempt to sell the school to you. I am not a mother whose child got rejected at a certain school.. and thus i'm steering you to another school to make myself feel good. I am a fellow senior who is in a similar situation and am trying to be honest. If I lived in La Jolla or San Diego county... I would not have even considered Irvine... but as the stalker noted... I live in OC... so that's my best fit. You need to look at your life, look at the big picture and visit the campuses. The vibe you get from them is the best indicator of where you belong. Follow your heart :-).

ya amiradaprincess is right. I thought UCLA would be my dream school, but after being rejected form LA, but accepted into USC, which i see as pretty much the same type of college, I realized that i would not enjoy my days in college because of the fact that I would have to live at home. Once i visited UCSD i really liked it. The spirit was a little on the low side, but I talked with current students and found that if youre willing to look for it there are things to do. I feel that UCSD is going to be really fun and I will enjoy my days near the beach. You should visit the colleges and just go on instincts, dont regret your decision.

Thanks everyone.

I visited both universities, twice. San Diego's beach is gorgeous, but I'm not particularly fond of the actual campus (Muir section to be exact, it gives me a forest feel). I love UCI's campus, especially the arc, everything's so modern and updated. So I'm definitely swayed by Irvine's environment.

UCSD is a great university, but I heard its strenghts lie in science/engineering/medicine, not so much for business or econ. Is this correct?

By the way, amiradaprincess mentioned UCI is planning on starting a law school. I heard it was a business school. Has anyone else heard these rumors?

amiradaprincess how very disrespectful of you. My D was a recruited athlete, and had her choice of any of the mid tier UC's. The only one she did not get into was UCI because she did not apply there. She visited last summer, and did not like the campus. As for my comment to you, I just recall that in another thread you said your main reason for attending UCI was because you could live at home. I am certainly not stalking you any more than you seem to be stalking me. This is an open forum dear. :)

okokok UCSD has one of the top rated schools in the country for Economics. I believe it is 10th.

ya i said that it was 10th in the nation for econ in my first post in the thread...

That is well above any of the mid-tier schools. :)

I was somewhat in the same situation choosing between UCSD and UCI (business/econ majors). As of right now, I am probably going to be attending UCSD simply because of timing. Yes, UCI is going to be expanding their economics department to include various business majors for fall 2007. However, with the program being extremely new, it will not have gained much recognition by the time graduation/applying for MBA comes around. UCSD, on the other hand, is already ranked high for their economics (I think this may be graduate school though?-but hey, even if that
s true, they should be good in undergraduate too considering some of the professors will probably be the same). ANywho, that
s just my take on it. But I agree with everyone else on this thread--just visit the campuses and see where you feel more at home.

UCI has a business school and there is talk about getting a law school at UCI too but that's just speculation at this point and if it does happen it wouldn't be for a while.
