Can someone please shed some light on this, if you or someone you know is attending. Thanks.

UCSD CSE&E: Ranked 13th Nationwide
UCI CSE&E: Ranked 31st Nationwide

I used google and figured this out in about 60 seconds, it may be associated with graduate schools or outdated, but I doubt UCI will overtake UCSD any time soon.

I’m pretty sure UCSD’s entire engineering department is more highly ranked than UCI’s department).

Jacob’s School of Engineering (UCSD)
Henry Samueli’s School of Engineering (UCI)

I don’t understand why you would choose UCI over UCSD if you’re a CSE major. UCSD obviously has the better engineering department.

Was not looking at any UC’s as OOS, so wanted to know if its worth it. UCSD is a slight reach based on schools data on naviance and UCI is a match, hence the question.

In all honesty, for undergrad, both schools are just fine for it. Now to elaborate, UCI is a much newer school than UCSD… which explains the lower ranks. It takes time to advance; thus said, UCI is a school that’s steadily increasing its quality of learning and standards. So if you don’t gain admission into UCSD, UCI is a fine choice. I have a few friends over at UCI for CSE and they’re doing just fine, and (like many CSE majors) they will be employed because there’s such a large demand for programmers and computer engineers anyways.

(Most rankings one finds is usually based on graduate studies)

Go to UCI’s CSE department. Then you can say you graduated from Samueli’s School of Engineering, making your employers think you went to UCLA.

Needed to hear some real viewpoints What I gather from another thread is that the Engineering dept at UCSD is not the greatest, then would it not make sense to just apply to UCI for CE?

I honestly thought UCSD would be better.

They’re honestly going to give you the same education. It’s about the environment. UCI’s conservative, quiet town or UCSD’s moderate, quiet town?

I turned down UCLA for UCSD and I’m a computer eng major…

UCSD’s engineering departments are great. Our Bioengineering is ranked 2 in the world, and everything else is generally above 20.

However, like Vehement said, it really doesn’t matter (in terms of a CSE major), so go to a school you’ll probably enjoy.

actually it does. My friend goes to UCI and he told me not many are CE majors in UCI, and even the few that are, they don’t really like it…it’s too new.

I have a friend who’s ecstatic about the CE department at UCI.

Like I said, you should really take the time to visit the schools, look for seminars during the admit day, and then make your choice. The best opinion you’ll get here is from actual CSE/CE students that go to UCSD… I’d also suggest going to UCI’s College Confidential page and requesting some general information from majors there.
