I’ve been looking around the internet recently and I’ve been noticing that one of UCSD’s goal is to make it into the top 5 for best Comp Sci majors. Also yesterday UCSD received 2 million dollars from an alumni designed to improve the comp sci department. How is UCSD’s comp sci program now and how much has it improved? I’m trying to see if UCLA would be a better fit or not for a comp sci major.
Since both are hard to get into…why not wait til you find out if you even have those two to choose from.
edited to add…I see that you’re a sophomore? It seems like you are basing “fit” on something so fluid as ranking. Rankings for CS doesn’t mean much. Do you think that there are only 5 or 10 very good CS programs in the US? There are more than that in Calif alone.
Don’t go off of rankings. Take a look at the schools’ websites and possibly visit after you do more research in the departments and the faculty and the school itself. Both schools are great. Are you in-state for California or do you live out of state?
i’m in-state but the reason why i’m worried is because the top-companies are kind of biased by what colleges you go to
They aren’t really. They just want to see that YOU have what they want. The difference between UCSD and UCLA will not make or break a job opportunity.
I think it’s $20 million and not $2 million, the donor wants to remain anonymous because he said UCSD CS program helped him tremendously.
Google professor Zhao from UCSB regarding UCSD and UCLA programs from Quora.
I really hope you get into to UCLA and go to UCLA after reading more about your posting history.
So I bring this thread up to clarify my post about donations to UCSD Computer Science. In 2013, there was a one time donation of about $18.5 million from an anonymous donor. In 2014, there was $2 million from the number one employee of Facebook, he is not one of the founders.

No, they’re not.
