UCSD or UCLA?

i know at first this may seem like a no-brainer to many of you, but just read along for a second.

first, i can have my major of choice at UCSD: int'l studies in economics.
at ucla, i'm stuck with european studies..whatever that is.

also, i live within 15 miles of UCLA..meaning i couldn't really justify paying to live on campus or take my car..and i really want to have a wholesome college experience.

i also want a little more 'personal' college experience. my top choice was UNC (17.5k undergrads), but i was waitlisted. i'm afraid i will hate being on a campus with double as many undergrads. UCSD is kind of in the middle, and i already have many friends going there.

on the other hand, i'm a UCLA legacy, and it has always been my 'dream school.' their sports, academics, and school pride are second to none. ncaa sports are huge for me, and i would miss that at SD.

pros and cons to both...i've almost submitted my SIR to UCLA a few times now, but i keep putting it off until i feel 'sure.'

thoughts and comments please??

you can try to change your major to something other than European Studies at UCLA.
if that has been your dream look at all the options before settling for SD.

commuting is a deal breaker imo… and so is a major I don’t want.

my parents have said i can live on campus…but it just doesn’t make sense financially. how hard is it to change majors? i saw they re-opened the ‘international and area studies’ major. but i have no idea how that coursework looks or the prereqs.

Which school is cheaper to attend?

they are similar…ucsd is offering me ~$14k, and UCLA ~$16k…which basically wash out assuming all costs (if i live on-campus)

haha it seems like carolina>ucsd>ucla

How many people are gonna be taken off the waitlist/when do you find out?

I would not like to study euro history… lol.

carolina is my top! i have to plan around it though - i won’t find out about it until mid-end june. so for now, it’s LA or SD. historically, odds are 37:1…although i have as good a shot as anyone…

as i said, i could try and switch into int’l and area studies…

UCSD just irks me because of the lack of athletics and school pride.

yeah they dont have any info on the international area studies…they only have International development studies.

idk look at the coursework for similar majors… its UCLA kid ur dream.
and once you are in i am sure that a major switch is not completely impossible.

i hear it’s a little harder than at most schools b/c of sheer volume and everything is impacted. and yeah, that’s the only one i could find info for too…looks like 13 upper division courses, plus a few pre-reqs i don’t have.

i’m a little confused about the semester-vs-quarter change. does 13 ‘courses’ mean quarter courses?

yeah having or not having the pre-reqs is a major factor for major changing.
from what i understand the 13 courses are classes that you need to have so they are 4 quarter units a course right?..that should be about 13 units or so a quarter.
if you are taking 4 quarters …two years…you would have ample time in the summer and winter to do pre-reqs.
i am not an expert in quarter vs. semesters nor a math person so maybe someone else can answer your question better.

turns out that major was impacted for '09 anyways. so that’s a scratch. i guess at the basic level it comes down to getting a degree from a good school with a well-rounded college life. that probably points to UCLA.
