I have to make a decision between UCR and UCSD. MS of Statistcs.
Though my family will support me, UCSD costs 49k, 10k more than UCR. And which one has a better location?Considering the chance to get a job, which one to choose? Thank for your suggestion。

Bias aside, I would choose UCSD–10K isn’t the biggest margin I’ve seen and in a couple of years will be negligible. My family lives 30 miles West of UCR (valley/desert border) and it’s hot year round, with the summers hitting 100+ with pretty consistent high humidity. UCSD’s name will probably be more recognized by employers–plus SD/LJ is located in a metropolitan area whereas Riverside is approximately 50-60 miles from downtown LA.

My friend went to UCR and he loves his college experience. BUT, In regard to your dilemma, he says: “UCSD! Hands down!”

IMO: SD is beautiful / great beaches / has the best weather in CA / abundant biotech companies where you may applied your skills / great night life (gas lamp, pacific beach) / relatively diverse population. So in terms of location, it is a no brainer.

Which one has a better statistics program for master students? If it turns out to be UCR, then 1-1.5 yrs in Riverside will not be so bad. According to my buddy, the food is decent (ethnic food etc), within half an hour to nice malls, yard-house, some pubs, and 2 hours away from la/long beach/sd (weekend can still be great).

So if the program at UCR is better, then save your money and endure the dullness of living in Riverside. But if UCSD will be better for your career, then saving 10k may not be worth your sacrifice.

To my knowledge, UCSD doesn’t even have a separate Statistics department, while UCR does. I think UCR can give you a better applied statistics training, but UCSD will have a better name.

I hope you’re not serious?
UCSD.

UCSD both for the name and the location…

i’m not usually a proponent of choosing location/name over program ‘fit’…but i lived in riverside for 4 years while my mom was going to La Sierra and Loma Linda and i hated every second of it. There are some areas of riverside that are nice, but there are other areas that are downright scary…plus you have the muggy hotness and the smell from the farms…no thanks.
