I got accepted to both of them just recently, and I'm looking for some input on where I should go. I'm really conflicted; I know Vanderbilt has a higher ranking than UCSD, but I'm going in as a Physics major, and from what I've heard, UCSD has an amazing physics program. I really like both of the campuses, but I'm from Los Angeles, so I have a bit of a bias toward UCSD. Gah, I need help.

I know the physics department is very good here at UCSD. There are lots of research opportunities if you talk to your professors. If you can get one of those, and get your name published somewhere with a letter of rec from the professor, then your acceptance for an MS or PHD (which in your field is almost required) will be almost guaranteed to many schools. Unfortunately I have no idea about Vanderbilt.
Good luck in making your decision, I know both are very good schools. Which means look at other factors than academics.
