So who's planning to choose UCSD over UCLA?

I was accepted as a Computer Science major at UCSD and a Cognitive Science major at UCLA. I'll most likely be SIR'ing to UCSD within the next couple of weeks.

I chose UCSD over UCLA, im pre-med and it just seemed like the right thing to do :)

A friend of mine at UCSD is going to Hopkins for med school. He got an interview at Harvard but didn’t get in. You’ll do fine here :)

I’m leaning toward UCSD over UCLA as a Molecular Biology major. UCLA may be the more prestigious, more renowned institution, but UCSD has plenty of majors where they’re just as competitive if not more so than those at UCLA. In fact, the graduate biology department is ranked well above UCLA by US News, particularly in Neurobiology in which they rank even higher than Berkeley. Having grown up in LA, La Jolla is a much nicer area than Westwood which is also a significant factor in my decision. With their biology departments being at worst equal, the decision is going to come down to where I feel more comfortable at. I really love the atmosphere of UCLA, but I’m not too thrilled about living there and having to drive through all the traffic if I want to go anywhere 5 miles outside of the institution. UCSD on the other hand is in a beautiful area less than 2 miles away from some amazing beaches, but the campus isn’t all that inspiring per se and there isn’t the same sense of school pride at UCLA. Right now I’d say I’m 55:45 in favor of UCSD, I’m just hoping when I visit both schools for their transfer events in May, I’ll get a genuine feel for which is going to be the better fit for me for the next two years.

I chose UCSD over UCLA. Unless something drastic happens, I’ll be at SD in the Fall.

@asphyxiac
Yayyyy ill see you in the fall! :D

@chemnerd727

I hope everyone in this thread picks UCSD!

I like you guys. Maybe we will run into one another during admit day. I’ll be the 6 foot tall girl in a <3 UCSD shirt.

@asphyxiac <3

@dilapidatedmind: Some parts of campus are even less than 2 miles. I live at The Village and it’s about a mile walk to Glider Port, which overlooks the beach. Yeah, the campus certainly isn’t known for its “spirit” but La Jolla is cool and you will NOT have the traffic issues you’re referring to at UCLA. I used to work up in Westlake Village (drove from SD once a week) so UCLA became my home away from home. I’d stop there and hang with my cousin, who graduated last year, or friends. Probably totaled 60 visits to UCLA over the past six years, so I’m familiar with both campuses.

Westwood is nice, but the traffic killed it for me. I didn’t even get into UCLA, but I cannot deal with LA traffic. You don’t have that problem at all down here and La Jolla isn’t downtown by any stretch. It feels like you’re in the suburbs.

how big is the surfing culture at black beach , or ucsd in general compared to ucla?

@ieatsharks: From my time spent at UCLA (both in dorms and frat houses) I can’t say I ever came across a surfboard. Santa Monica beach is still a bit of a trek from campus, whereas at UCSD you can either walk to the beach or take a shuttle. We have three surfboards just in my apartment haha.

A lot of people surf blacks, but you have to deal with the old naked guys walking around.

@grimes99 that sounds awesome lol u attend ucsd right?

@ieatsharks: Yup!

@grimes99 word! ucsd ftw

I gonna choose UCSD instead of UCLA.
My major in UCLA is pre-political science.
In UCSD, my major is political science.
I choose UCSD because it is not a premajor.
At the same time, UCSD has a lower requirement in double major, minor, or internship program.
Third, my major in UCSD has a little higher ranking than UCLA.
UCSD#7 UCLA#11
Why I need to choose a pre-major instead of a major?
I love La Jolla. Although I have never been there, I know the beach is so beautiful.
Maybe I was born in Hong Kong and lived near the sea, I would like to see the sea view.
I feel bored in LA. Don’t wanna live in LA anymore…

I live in San Diego and UCSD is amazing school! They divide the school into 6 colleges to make is feel like a smaller community. They students there seems to be more mature than other Universities, plus it seems to be ranked higher and higher every year. I will totally go with UCSD over UCLA

I’m torn between UCLA and UCSD. My major in both schools is math/econ. How and where can I check and compare the ranking of my major?

@Daisy24: I go to UCSD and can assure you the whole “six colleges” thing is bs. You don’t assimilate based upon what college you go to and almost every class you take has students from all six colleges in it.

It’s probably slightly different for freshmen/sophomores who live on campus, but for transfers the colleges make zero difference in the experience.
