Why would anyone in their right minds choose UCSD over UCLA ?!??!?!??!

How about because they like San Diego better than Los Angeles? I’ve live in L.A., and I can tell you that it’s not for everybody.

Because they’re in the same tier, even if UCSD is on the borderline. :P

UCLA is way too close to home plus its in LA!!! LA has like the worst air for breathing cuz the place is clogged up in pollution. The air at UCSD is so fresh cuz you are right on the beach. Plus some departments at SD are better than those at LA. For example, the biomed is #4 in the nation at SD.

biomed isn’t a department. don’t know if you’re talking about BE or biology or the BE:PM major…

Over Cornell, Imperial College London, Toronto.

UCSD >> UCLA in Engineering

ARWU (really the only ranking system that doesn’t include nonsense measures):
Overall:
13 - UCLA
14 - UCSD

Engineering:
10 - UCSD
32 - UCLA

So I think everyone in their right mind would choose UCSD over UCLA for Engineering.

I know this is a bit off the subject, but some of you seem to know SD pretty well. Does anyone have an opinion about which SD area high school they would have attended if they’d had the choice? I’d really appreciate some advice. I have one daughter who will be attending UCSD this fall and another daughter who will be starting ninth grade. I’m looking into the area around La Jolla and north, but I’m open to wherever people recommend. Thanks.

@milliemontag - best to start a new thread :)

Thanks Astrina. BTW, we loved the pictures you posted. They helped us a lot. My daughter chose UCSD over UCSB, UCI, UCD, UCSC.

I chose UCSD over CSU Los Angeles, UC Riverside, and UC Santa Barbara…I’m really excited for the fall, actually…but I’m just worried about being able to find a roomate…I have to live off campus because I’m a transfer…

This was a few years ago, but I chose UCSD over Cal, UCD, UCI, UCSB, USD, Georgetown, Wake, and NYU.

Milliemontag - I went to one of the poorer high schools in North SD County and absolutely loved it. I was raised in Orange County, went to private school, and so on…I never would have thought that I’d flourish in a “ghetto” public school, but I did. It gave me perspective on life in general. Now in the La Jolla area you aren’t going to encounter many high schools like mine (nor would most parents want to send their kids to a school like mine). La Jolla High has an excellent academic reputation. There are numerous good private schools (i.e. La Jolla Country Day, Bishops, etc.) and other public schools known for academics (Torrey Pines, San Dieguito, etc.). I wouldn’t choose any of them over my alma mater though!

Those USNews rankings are about as relevant as times higher. The only thing that matters is the research output of the faculty.

I guess if you are undergrad then its all irrelevant. UCLA does not exist in graduate engineering research. SD is quite strong.

CWalker: Thanks so much for your input. I really appreciate it.

UCSD over Harvey Mudd, Northwestern, Rice, UCLA, UCD

to whoever said that their 4/10 of their suitemates chose sd over cal, no offense, but it’s a fluke.

there was some link under another school that showed the results of cross-admit battles. sd wasn’t on there (it only included the top privates, cal, LA, and UVA), but if cal wins 2/3rds of its cross-admit battles with LA, sd must win faaaaar fewer.

UCSD over UIUC, U of Michigan Ann-Arbor, UIUC, Carnegie Mellon, UCI -_-;..
My financial status… no permanency resident card yet;;
I am going to transfer from UCSD to other private universities

Transfer from UCSD to other private universities? If that was your goal then why didn’t you choose Carnegie Mellon? Hopefully you aren’t counting on transferring to Stanford, Harvard, etc., because your chances aren’t good (to put it lightly).
