UCSD point system question. Help thx

Can anyone tell me how UCSD point system works? How many points do i need to get in to UCSD? What is the requirement

check the UCSD admissions website, and the archives on this site. More than enough information

If applying for the 2011/2012 year, you will probably need around a 7800. Around 75% of your points come from GPA and test scores. It goes something like…
UC GPA x 1000
(SAT + 2 subject tests) x .8
300 points for over 200 hours of community service. 150 points for 100-199 hours.
300 (I think) for ELC
500 for over 40 a-g courses
Points for hardship (death of parent…), low income, going to a poor school, etc.

Scroll down to get point system info. The cutoff changes every year, so you won’t know until after decisions are released.

wow, i didnt know i was selected this way. i feel like a noob.

Can anyone tell me if i made the right calculations? Based on the information below I think I have around 8242 points. So what do you guys think my chances are? ive heard many people say 8000-8100 was the cutoff for this year. So I should have a great chance to get accepted next yearright? Sorry im acting a littlevweird but its because before seeing this thread i had given up on getting accepted to UCSD.

Essays: (i kind of integrated the 3 topics below into my two essays)

 1. when i was a freshman my parents got in an accident and i had to start taking care of my whole family. what i mean is that my chores got tripled, i needed to help my parents move through the house, and i had to walk my bro to school before i went. My school and his school are in 2 opposte directions.
 2. how my parents accident coupled with my volunteering at the hospital and retirement has changed my outlook on life and how i found my true calling which is medicine because God has blessed me with intelligence and lots of empathy towards the needy and weak.
 3. i also included in my essay a great quote from one of a famous surgeon (i am drawing a blank on his name right now) but it said " i was never the smartest in med school, but what i lacked in ability i made up with through discipline." i think this quote really applies to me and i explained why.

FutureENTSurgeon:

did you convert your ACT to SAT using the UC method? Or some score conversion table? It makes a difference

you’re not going to get 300pts for educational environment unless your school is in the lowest quintile or something, you should double check that before giving yourself those points.

your community service would only net you 150 pts, not 300. (200+ hours = 150, 300+hrs = 300)

I don’t know how to rank personal challenge, but I would give yourself half just so you can stick with the worst case scenario

–btw to get in you’d need a little less than 7800. If going for impacted major, probably around 8000

Your gpa seems a bit low for UCSD. The average gpa of people who are accepted is 4.08 (I read this in a pamphlet). And I wouldn’t assign all the points for each category in your case. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought UCSD would assign more points to a better high school.

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html</a></p>

This is the UC Translation Scale that will be used up until the fall 2010. and you clearly see that a 30 ACT= 2040 SAT

xxpanda: I understand my gpa is low and i knew what the UCSD average is. i dont need anybody to remind me. second of all no they assign the points to a low performing high school ask anybody.

enemyunit: #1-I was told for the volunteering score you get full points after 200hrs. even if what you say is true about 300 hrs equaling full points i would still have over 8000 points.

2-the UC’s define a Low performing school that is in Tier 1-4 just look at this at Pg. 3 http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2010/freshman_admit_profile_2010.pdf</a></h1>

@future…

You seem to be pretty confident about ucsd admissions. I understand that you probably researched thoroughly and such about the admission process and stats, but I would like to remind you and others that sometimes things go pretty wack in the admissions office of any school (yes, generalization here). Not saying confidence and optimism is bad, but it’s always good to have some type of preparation for the worst case scenario.

So when you are mapping out these points for youself, don’t forget that’s all they are…estimates. Anyhow, goodluck to you when the time comes to apply :].

^^^ Exactly. After having three kids go through this process now, I have seen everything. There is no such thing as a sure thing. Be prepared for anything and always have a true safety on your list.

FutureENTSurgeon, I got in with a 3.80 UC GPA, a 1960 SAT, a “personal challenge” that probably gave me full points, quite a few leadership roles, about 200 hours of community service (hospital, key club, etc), and going to a school in the lowest quintile, just to put things in perspective. I was rejected from UCB and UCI, accepted to UCSD and UCSB. Not sure what my points score was and I don’t feel the need to calculate it, but I feel like some people are being kind of difficult on you. But you can’t let yourself get too confident or the universe will play tricks on you! Good luck!

I don’t think they are trying to be tough on him. He totally has a great shot at UCSD. They are just warning of overconfidence and I think that is appropriate. Congratulations, by the way. Good for you!

momfirst3: Thanks for your comments

To everyone else: i think you guys interpreted my comments the wrong way. I am not over confident but very suprised after looking at this thread. Im suprised that i have a decent chance to get in. For about 2 years now since the "personal challenge i have given up on UCSD which was my top school back in middle school.

Sorry if there was any misunderstanding.

@FutureENTSurgeon I personally think you have a good chance for getting in but looking at admissions for Fall 2010, it’s obvious that the standard for a UCSD admit is going up. I know someone that works in the admissions office and I can tell you there’s never a guarantee for admissions – even if you meet the points needed. Keep working hard and good luck.

just to clear things up Future, I think you’re going to get in. I was just pointing out some things to note from your calculations. Trust me when I say 300 hrs for 300 pts. I personally asked an admissions officer when I visited there last summer. I think it used to be 200, but I’m guessing they hiked it up sometime in the past few years.
