I have two College Guides here that say UCSD students do not like their professors very well. Can we get some feedback on this from current students at UCSD?

Come on folks…surely someone here attends UCSD and can report on the professors.

@tokdoc - you an incredibly short attention span … eleven minutes between first post and first prodding, eesh.

i like many of my professors as people, and i respect all of them as professors. their jobs aren’t easy, and considering that the top priority for a research professor (i was a chem major) is to pull in lots of research funding and publish lots of papers, it’s a wonder that they find any time to teach. some enjoy it and are natural-born teachers, others see it as a side task, but i’ve never met a professor who actively disliked it and let it show.

once you get to the smaller upper-division classes, it’s a lot easier to get to know your professors. i’ve been asked to babysit by one, gone surfing with another, and grabbed beers at porter’s pub with even more – it’s pretty neat to chat with them and see how their lives twisted and turned to land them where they are.

(and for comparison, all my UCSD professors were much friendlier than the ones i encounter here at my current institution, an ivy league in NYC … but maybe it’s just a snobby east coast thing)

I met Professor Johnson, the Chemistry teacher for first year. She is amazing, said the majority of the students. Tough and fun at the same time. I attended one of her class with my friend who goes there, her teaching style is good as well as her casual and upbeat sensation.

I can’t say for sure for the rest of the Professors, but as astrina said, I think UCSD is a laid back school, thus, it means that the Professors are somewhat laid back.

I wish my professors were laid back…

Yes, Johnson seems more “laidback” than some other ones I have had.

Students not liking the professors here sounds somewhat absurd… Those probably weren’t very reliable college guides… Most aren’t.

From what I see and hear, the people that will complain the most are the people who will get disappointing grades… I mean not many people will recommend professors that will give them C’s D’s F’s etc.

I have had great professors in my first year. There were only a couple maybe that I wouldn’t recommend… but they have all been helpful and nice. Keep in mind that TAs do all the grading so you’ll likely get closer with your TA than your professor (I’m talking about the huge lower div classes mostly)

i’ve had some of the best teachers i’ve ever had this last year… which is really impressive seeing as how I was a freshman and was enrolled in lower division classes.

Astrina-Don’t hate…I’m old and multitasking :)

Thanks for the all the info on the professors though. We had almost decided not to even apply to UCSD based on these silly College Guides. But, you guys are on the ground testing it out. So, we’ll go with your opinions.
