UCSD Pros and Cons?

UCSD

pros: beach, pretty nice number of ents (might not be immediately apparent), solid education, awesome xfer housing, good research opportunities, plenty of student jobs, supposedly lots of recruiting from surrounding companies, and strong tutoring support.

Also, cool tunnels underground. UCLA has these too. They are funnnnn (the ones at UCLA, idk about the ones at SD, but underground tunnels generally correlate with trouble amirite).

cons: parking tickets galore, moderately unattractive student body (all right, there were a few golden haired “ideal CA boy” surfer-esque hotties there the times I’ve visited, but there were also a lot of leering grody dudes who looked as though they hadn’t showered since last week), and the school’s bizarre need to hype itself up/compete with UCI/UCLA/Cal. Also, their alarmist bs such as below:

[MiraCosta College - The Transfer Center - Fall 2012 UCSD Transfer Information](MiraCosta College | 404)

Really? 3.8+? Is that what they’re telling CCC transfer centers now? Get real.

student jobs, transfer housing, (of course education), beach is straight money to my ears, and it’s only an hour away from OC…

Damn that sux. I’m going to Mira Costa in the spring. I coulda had a tag with a 3.0. sumuvabeech

There are a ton of jobs in SD for all majors if you have a good g.p.a. The best thing about UCSD is that its in San Diego lol. If you have a car, you will have a good time. I would hate to be stuck on SD campus in La Jolla. That way you can check out Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and Gaslamp district downtown if you are over 21. (or for ladies the Navy or Marine corps bases lol).

The transfer housing is nice, but its also 1200 a month. And for only for the school year. You gotta get out during breaks. You can get a roommate situation for like 600 and up including utilities depending on where you live within less than a 30 min drive. Parking sux though on campus.

Wow…I would have to disagree with some of the above statements mentioned. I transferred to UCSD in Fall 2011, so i just finished my first quarter and will begin my second quarter soon. I absolutely LOVE the school and everything I’ve experienced during my first quarter.

Pros:

 • New transfer housing. I live in Village West in the Tower in a double with an ocean view and just absolutely love it. You meet a lot of people in the building which is a always a plus! There’s definitely parties every weekend at the Village, but most of the time they do get shut down once quiet hours are enforced by RAs/RSOs. There’s also I-House right by the village! in terms of partying, it goes I-house then the Village. There are also study rooms across the street by Village East, which is a plus if you don’t want to walk to Geisel.
 • The beach is literally right across the street.
 • The community. Everyone is extremely nice. Plus, there’s PB and the Gaslamp district! (can’t wait until i turn 21!)

- San Diego weather! Who doesn’t like it?

Cons:

 • PARKING! The closest parking structures are Pangea and Hopkins. I usually park in Pangea, but if i can’t find a spot I can usually find one in Hopkins. It definitely depends on the time though. Usually during the day you’re circling the structure to find a spot.
 • The Campus is huge! It takes me 15 mins to walk to Geisel/Price Center from the Village! I’d suggest to bring a bike.
 • Sometimes the Village feels “dead.” Usually after midterms the village “dies” down a bit, but i heard its supposed to get worse this upcoming quarter? Usually winter there’s nothing going on at all. However, I’ve never experienced a socially dead weekend at UCSD.

I know most will disagree with my thoughts on the social aspect of UCSD, but these were my experiences and i believe it highly depends on the person. Don’t sit in your room expecting people to throw themselves at you or for parties to magically come to you. YOU have to put yourself out there.

Therefore, i would highly suggest everyone to RUSH!!! I LOVE the greek system. It’s a community within a community. I rushed this fall quarter and I can’t imagine what my first quarter would’ve been without rushing the fraternity I’m in. Finally to everyone complaining about not being able to find “hot girls,” join the greek system?

Which frat did you join?

I have spent many weekends visiting my best friend who transferred to SD and they are always crazy. He never lived on campus though. Always with other students off campus. Downtown and PB are a blast. They do joke often about “UCSD Goggles” and how they are never sure if someone is actually attractive or just attractive because they have limited options haha

@Grimes99

Sigma Nu

@dwayne: Pike tried to rope me in, but I 86’d that idea real fast haha.

this is off-topic. But anyone know if Econ is impacted in UCSD? Or UCI also?

I tried googling this, but only got subjective info.

@strive101: Not at UCSD. Doubt it is at UCI.

[Impacted Majors](Capped Majors)

what does it necessarily mean if a major is impacted or not, surely doesn’t mean if the major isn’t impacted then one has a golden ticket…right?

too many applicants but not enough spaces

If I may, I think for several impacted majors we can extend that a bit. Doesn’t it mean there are too many qualified applicants and not enough space?

Anyway, I’m gonna give myself a day to visit the campus this next semester, so I’ll report back. I’ll try to keep it as unbiased as I can, as it should be kept in mind that San Diego and I just don’t get along very well.

^yeah. So it’s like UCLA Biz econ, 4.0 and good ECs still isn’t a shoe in.

And thanks Grimes99!

@asphyxiac: LOL I agree with the 3.8+ GPA for non tag applicants. I only think that applies to impacted majors.
There are a ton of 3.3+ GPA applicants being accepted to UCSD with no tag. There won’t be too many applicants this year because you can only apply to one UC and the 3.5 GPA requirement will give more space for lower GPA students to get in.

3.8 is ridiculous.
