UCSD Prospective Athlete

Hey! I'm from San Diego and UCSD would be a good school to go if I were to get rejected from LA or Berkeley. I really would like to compete in college in track and field in the hurdle events. However, I got a problem. I joined track and field on my junior year and I am afraid that colleges will look down at that and think that I'm not committed. There's a reason why I couldn't join track and field in my sophomore year and freshman year, but I won't get into detail. I do the hurdle events and have good times being the fact that it was my first year. I went to CIF on my first year and I have participated in all major events in the San Diego region except Arcadia. I was looking at the college choices in my newspaper site to see where some runners are going to college and notice a particular person whom I raced against that got into UCSD as a hurdler. I have better times than him and it was on my first year. So if I have better times than him now and in my first year, do you think it's a possibility that I can get into UCSD as an athlete. Note: I have exceptional grades and test scores (not CC average lol).

I don’t know much about t&f or about how your times are for DI schools. I do, however, know of two athletes, both former gymnasts (they were teammates of my daughter in gymnastics) who quit gymnastics and started track as juniors in high school. Both signed w/ major DI schools (UConn…transferred to BU, and UNC Chapel Hill). The UNC girl made the Olympic Team that went to Greece. So, yeah…I think that what matters most is how you are doing currently.

Well are you about to go into senior year? If you are I would contact the coaches immediately with times, scores, ect. Or you could just try and walk on.

yeah im in my senior year. ive been sending info to colleges and all but still havent gotten a reply. should i keep sending information?

UCSD doesn’t offer athletic scholarship. They’re in D2 or D3 something so I think you should be fine. UCLA and Berkeley are totally different stories. PAC-10 is competitive

Why wouldn’t they offer scholarships…they are DII and athletic scholarships are permitted.

UCSD is D2, they do offer athletic scholarships but they are only $500 per student. They may have increased slightly since we were looking there.

i kinda dont care if i get in with a scholarship or not. it would be nice, but my priority is to get into UCSD if all else fails and where I can have a chance to do something i enjoy.
