UCSD ranks at 35 on USNWR 2009!!!

Wow, UCSD jumps 3 spots from 38 to 35 in the just released US News and World Report on Best National Colleges 2009!!! I think it's safe to say that it definately would be considered in the top tier of UC's right behind Berkeley at 21 and UCLA at 25. (Both those schools stayed the same as last year by the way) The only other positive change was UC Riverside jumping 7 spots to #89 and a big decrease by UC Santa Cruz falling 17 spots from 79 to # 96! Irvine and Santa Barbara stayed the same at #44 and Davis fell 2 spots from 42 to tie with them at 44

haha, i'm slowly working my way up the ladder.

of course, this only leaves 7 potential schools for a postdoc ...

Keep in mind that these ratings are ratings for the schools' graduate programs.

actually it's for undergrad, hence the "best colleges 2009" title. USNWR also does a separate ranking system for graduate programs, usually sorted by department.

National Universities Rankings - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report

Good to hear.

I wonder what the methodology of statistics was. Are there any other rankings that more or less corroborate the posted ones?

although when you look at the "raw score" given to each school, SD has a score of 62, compared to a score of 58 that's held by the three uc's tied at 44. when you look at it this way, ucsd doesn't seem to be that much in front of those three. however, ucla has a raw score of 73 and berkeley with 77, so it depends on how you want to look at it.

So... how, exactly, does this affect my education?

^^^ My question exactly. You da man Slorg.

it doesn't. it can affect your future career salary though.

USNWR means a lot. Rankings = bragging rights.... more advantage for all of us

It is good to see UCSD moving up......yes....upward mobility. It is a sign that UCSD is improving for the good.

In terms of public school rankings:
1]University of California—Berkeley * 21 21 0
2]University of Virginia * 23 23 0
3]University of California—Los Angeles * 25 25 0
4]University of Michigan—Ann Arbor * 25 26 -1
5]University of Wisconsin—Madison * 38 35 3
*6]University of California—San Diego * 38 35 3
7]Georgia Institute of Technology * 35 35 0
8]University of Illinois—Urbana - Champaign * 38 40 -2
9]University of Washington * 42 41 1
1o]University of California—Irvine * 44 44 0
1o]University of California—Santa Barbara * 44 44 0
1o]University of California—Davis * 42 44 -2

I remembered when I first applied in 06, UCSD was at #5 with Cal & UCLA taking on #1 and #3 slot....hopefully when I graduate, it would be a top3 public uni. beating out Michigan's Ann Arbor and Wisconsin's Madison......competition is pretty neck and neck

I'm glad to see us moving up, but our undergrad ranking is still nowhere close to our overall graduate/international ranking (at least in Shanghai). UCSD was also listed in the "up-and-coming colleges" section though, which is promising.

"haha, i'm slowly working my way up the ladder.
of course, this only leaves 7 potential schools for a postdoc ..."

I'm right there with you astrina. If I want to keep moving up the ladder it's basically Harvard postdoc or bust for me. I'm glad to see UCSD alums representing in the upper echelon universities!

mrxalleycat - your list ain't all that accurate. you skipped a couple of public schools. we're tied for 7th and the ucd, uci and ucsb are tied for 12th. (i double checked, could still be wrong though)
