UCSD- Residency for tuition purposes

I have been reading this and now I'm freaking out because it seems like I won't be considered as a resident!!!

About Residence for Tuition Purposes

So if you are 24 years old or more and not financially independent, you won't be considered a resident?? I don't get it!! I have been living in California for the past 4 years and have never lived in another U.S. state!!

I really can't afford to pay the out of state tuition!!

No i think its only if your UNDER 24 and your parents don’t claim you as an exemption, you need to prove you are financially independent. I’m not 100% sure on this though.

Well the thing is that my parents are deceased, but I live with my grandparents in California and I am dependent on them.

It only applies if you are under 24 and NOT dependent on a California resident.

Basically it’s saying that if you meet criteria one and two (live in cali for 366+ days and show intent to stay here) but you are under 24, then you must show that you are also financially independent.

Guess they don’t want kids that are still dependent on their parents coming to live in cali for a year and getting lower tuition rates.

Oh and…

If you are over the age of 24 you are automatically considered to be financially independent.

That is incorrect Vertex.

Students who are financially dependent on parents who are residents of California are exempt from showing financial independence. They are considered residents for tuition.

Where did I say they weren’t exempt?

Either I’m seeings things or you edited your post. I’ll go with I’m seeing things since I’m a psychotic S.O.B. so nvmind me.

So will I have to pay out of state tuition?

I am 24, live with my grandparents (they don’t give me money just provide me with a place to live for free) and I live on financial aid (I’m not working).

If you meet the 2nd criteria you’re good to go. Financial aid might even cover most of your tuition.

Yeah I do because I have a bank account in Cal, a california driver licence, a california ID and my car is registered in california.

Yep, you meet all three so you’re fine.
