Hey,
I have a few questions regarding housing and room assignments for UCSD.

It's really important for me to have my own quiet space. When do you find out if you're put into a single or triple dorm room? I'm coming in as a freshman and I know it's unlikely that I'll get the single I want.
I just wondered if you can apply for housing, find out if you got a single dorm, then accept and pay or reject it and rent a room somewhere near by.

If you can't find out about your assignment in advance, would you suggest not even trying with the housing application?
This issue is really worrying me and I don't know if I'll have the money for anything available if I wait until August since I have to pay out of state tuition....

Stop being such an introvert and have fun with your roommates. You won’t be getting the single.

Last year I found out about my roommates and which residence hall I would get to live pretty late, like about a month or a little more before school started.

If you are an incoming freshman, I really recommend you living on campus because it’s gonna be hard for you to get to know people if you live on your own off campus because sometimes (especially during the first week of school when they are tons of events going on) you’ll be too lazy to take a bus or drive here to participate in such things.

I think no matter what, you’ll face problems while living in a suite with other 9 people anyway. You just have to accept the fact that nobody is perfect and have to try to deal with problems on your own. That’s how life works. I am living in a triple now and to be honest, I don’t like my roommates that much but I don’t hate them either. People have both positive and negative sides. I believe the beauty of living in a res hall during your first year is about getting to know new people, solving problems rather than trying to get away from them, and getting real college experience.

You definitely won’t feel the same living on campus and off campus.

Why do you say your chances at getting a single are unlikely? IIRC there are a fair bit of singles on campus depending on what college you’re in. It’s the people that want doubles in dorms that have to worry

For freshman, it is still possible to get a single room, but it’s rather rare. Maybe like a 10-15% chance out of the people that wanted a single, which is a pretty small group to begin with.
From what I hear, you roomates are chosen by a computer system. You fill out a survey of sorts with questions such as: What time do you go to sleep?, How quiet do you like your room?. Something along those lines. In the end, the computer will put you with people that are similar to you. The only people you will probably have to worry about will be your neighbors.
