Ucsd ship

Has anybody used Medi-Cal to waive the health insurance from UCSD?

Ya if you have health insurance you should waive SHIP. No point in paying for it if you’re already covered.

Guess I gotto call them so I can answer all these questions on the form, sigh.

Why not just fill out the form online?

I don’t know the specific details of my coverage so I can’t answer it online without help.

keep the SHIP! Everyone I know who ditched it wishes they had it. Campus health is great and it’s right there. They can do broken ankles, xrays, concussions, medications, shots, pretty much anything. You only save $200 by waiving it— but if you need it first year you will be glad it’s there. Remember you won’t have mom and dad there to drive you to the doctor if you’re sick/injured.

Isn’t the SHIP fee like around $300/quarter? o.o

@SurfSD88

I’m really not trying to rain on your parade or anything but just for the record, I have waived it every quarter and have honestly only gone once for a TB test for an EDS class (which was $15 I think). But I’m full covered under Kaiser though and got a local physician when I moved down here. Not to invalidate any of your experiences, but just the experience I have had for those curious.

Dude no need to bash my postings, (at least that’s how it sounds every time you reference my username). It’s good to have a mix of opinions on something like SHIP. Just write “I’ve been at ucsd for a year and have only needed the health center once, so I don’t think Ship is that great.”
Thanks!

^Bash your postings? No no no absolutely not. It’s just that a lot of my recent posts have seemed to be opposite in opinion as yours so I was just saying that I wasn’t trying to go against you on purpose. And also while may disagree that it doesn’t mean I think you’re wrong or stupid. We just have had different experiences. It’s not that I think SHIP is bad, it’s just that for me personally I didn’t use it. I wasn’t trying to be mean. :(

I waived SHIP last year for 2 semesters, because I had Kaiser.(until 19 birthday)
To waived I had to provide a name of local doctor and my new South Kaiser number.(I am from San Francisco)
Even without SHIP I went once for emergency (it was October), I didn’t have to pay anything.

Since Spring semester I have had a SHIP and I used once (it was July - summer semester), they charge me $20 for a visit and lab. They said it was not emergency visit, so I had to pay.

don’t have much experience with this stuff, but i think SHIP is good for what you pay. convenient, nurses are nice, competent workers with good resources and what not. my friend on SHIP told me the waiting list is OK for most things, not too bad. but if you’re like me and don’t really need to get much medical-anything (fingers crossed), you might as well keep your current insurance. while i believe SHIP is good, that’s if you need insurance and SHIP is an option. if you’re already covered, might as well stick with what you have. unless you’re really unsatisfied with medi-cal and SHIP is cheaper or something. it is good though, have no doubt. they took great care of my friend who twisted an ankle. just know that when you move down there, you may have to make some changes with medical like with kaiser you have to pick a new doctor, get a new medical number.

So hm for those who have done the ship waiver with medi-cal, do you know if medi-cal is considered HMO, POS, or neither?
And at what age does it expire @__@?
Actually, I don’t know the answers to any of the question, so help would be much appreciated…
