UCSD to get football team next year

What is your opinion on this? And would you like to see a UCSD marching band like UCLA and UC Berkeley?

Come on, somebody has to have an opinion on this matter.

It’s not going to happen… starting a new football team would cost millions of dollars. And in this economic state, there’s just no way.

by the way, the new AS UCSD president has placed a survey on the spring 2009 elections and a majority of the students that voted want to have a football team. So I guess UCSD isn’t as big of a nerdy school as people think, most want school spirit in the form of sports, like UCLA or UC Berkeley.

football yes

band…no

Yep the survey did indicate students want a football team. I voted yes haha. However… I can’t see it happening, certainly not in the near future.
Now what we REALLY need is greek housing!

I’ve had it when people call us UC Socially Dead. That connotation attached to our campus has to go away FOREVER.I want to bring a change to the campus, and to do that, we need more school spirit that will make people really proud of attending UCSD and will cause more people to apply. I am not saying that it will happen overnight, but if we want to add more school spirit, then certainly ALL of the students need to contribute and create traditions we can be proud of. We need a marching band, more people to join the greek system, create campus traditions, and a football team. With that, I believe we can change the universities’ face.

Congrats chrisg30, you have just appointed yourself to be Mr/Ms UCSD Rah Rah. Good luck with your endeavor, but I’ve got a feeling by the time UCSD becomes more like a UCLA or Cal, you’ll be sending in your alumni donations.

why? I could send UCSD a donation whenever I want. who cares if it does not match ucla and uc berkeley’s status.lol.

It would be great if UCSD had a football team, but it’s very hard to get a football team started from nothing. Finding a place to play games would be very difficult, and building a stadium would be expensive. Also UCSD is a div. 2 sports school so it’s not like they would be up there with Cal or UCLA. There isn’t any div 2 football programs in CA right now. Getting quality players to come to UCSD would require scholarships, and time. I don’t think UCSD will ever get a team.

I don’t want a football team.

Getting greek housing is going to be difficult because La Jolla is full of… (it rhymes with kicks) and won’t allow UCSD to have frat row.

As for the football team: Yeah it’d be nice but I don’t see where we’re going to get tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars when so many kids are struggling just to pay tuition. The whole issue is complicated by Title IX. If we get a football team, we’ll have to match the money spent on women’s sports too. Not to mention the fact that we’ll probably have to cut several existing men’s teams also.

Hopefully it’ll come in time. UCSD is barely 40 years old for crying out loud. There is no other university of similar age that comes CLOSE to accomplishing what SD has done in its short life.

There isn’t any div 2 football programs in CA right now.

Well, there is Humboldt State, but that’s about it… Anyway, I do think a competitive sports program helps to raise the stature of a university, increases school spirit and social activities, and makes admission more competitive. You can look at the top ten publics in terms of athletics and one really sticks out:

UCB: Division I-A
UVA: Division I-A
UCLA: Division I-A
UM: Division I-A
UNC: Division I-A
W&M: Division I-AA
UCSD: Division II
GT: Division I-A
UWM: Division I-A
UIUC: Division I-A

However, I think football (some of the problems were mentioned above: money, Title IX) should take a back seat to a move to Division I, similar to what Davis did a few years ago. This can only happen with the current athletics program being competitive and being able to large crowds.

Ignoring UC Berkeley and UCLA, the mid tier UCs and below have been successful and other sports and have been in the national spotlight. UCI with Men’s Volleyball and Baseball, UCSB with soccer, etc.

I definitely think UCSD should get a football team.

I’d be happy with getting bumped up to division 1 for the other sports first

doubt its going to happen any time soon. $$$$$$$$$$

nah. a football-less school is what makes ucsd what it is.

I think D-1 basketball is much more realistic and less expensive sounding
