UCSD TRANSFER DILEMA???

okay so i was looking through the admissions of fall 2013 and i noticed that alot if not all of the biology majors who were missing a prereqs got denied. even someone with a 3.90 GPA but was missing pre-reqs.
i mistakenly applied as a biology major specializing in biochem and cell biology, when what i meant to apply for was a chemistry major specializing in biochem. its obviously too late to alert them of this and hope they consider me for this major instead of the one i applied for.
im worried becuase i am missing one pre-req for the above bio major, whereas i have all the prereqs for the chem major and have ~3.7-3.8 GPA. the problem is a cant take the pre-req im missing becuase i will be considered to have excess units and wont be considered for admission at all.
Do you guys still think i have a shot at UCSD even with one missed pre-req??

From my months of research on this website, I have heard that UCSD isn’t very strict on major prerequisites. Prerequisites really only matter when you are applying for an impacted major. They mainly base their decisions on your GPA. As long as you selected an alternative major, you should be fine. I am certain that you will probably get rejected as a biology major, since it is impacted, but you should get in as your alternative major. Once you get into UCSD, you can always switch your major to chemistry.

By the way, I also read your post on the UCSD thread, are you at a community college, or a 4 year? What is your alternative major at UCSD?

so it turns out i just received an acceptance letter to UCSD for my major! still really confused cause i was pretty sure i would get rejected due to the missing pre-req, especially since it was a biology one which i would assume is very important. anyways thanks for the help! i will try to switch to the chemistry major if i decide to go there.
And i am a second year from a california CC (irvine valley college) and my alternative major was microbiology, another bio major :l

@bookham letter meaning in the mail?

well no, i meant the acceptance on the website

Just curious, how is the IVC/UCI area? Is it nice? I assume you want to get away since it is your hometown? UCI and UCSD seem similar to me; I applied to both. Both are by the beach! Any comments regarding the schools/location?

^ I can answer that.

The UCI area is relatively nice if you like the suburban feeling away from the big city of LA. You can’t really do much without a car so that’s a necessity. Also, it’s pretty quiet here…so not sure if you’re looking for an area that has more energetic vibe like a city.

@Bookham did you take Organic Chemistry and/or Physics?

Also, does anyone have any idea how they look at overload units if you take summer school?

Can we just basically omit the units we don’t want. I took Stats and Calculus when it said it would transfer but then they changed the agreement and I had to take an extra semester of Calculus.

@ccnube :im actually from DC but i moved to Cali so im still kinda new to irvine, but its a really nice area, EXTREMELY SAFE lol. pretty much what @ocnative said. and as for schools, i personally think UCSD is the better school (like for science) but id still rather live in the Irvine area, just cause i like it more so its gonna be a tough choice.

@enferrari :yes i have taken the first semseter of Organic Chem with an A, and im currently taking the second semester. as for physics, i have taken the first semester (motion, energy… ect) also with an A, and am currently taking the second semester of physics (electricity, magnetism … ect). However im not taking the third semester, well atleast not til i transfer maybe. i was missing a Bio pre-req. and i dont think so to your questions about omitting certain units, i think you must report all units taken

Off topic, but I was under the impression that Biology wasn’t impacted this year at UCSD :o

Yup bio is no longer impacted! So you can go into the major at any time.

WHAAA?? no wonder why i got in then lol

Two things – Biology isn’t impacted for transfers as of Fall 2014. The assumption that you’re rejected for missing one prereq as a biology major here at UCSD, even when the major was impacted a few years ago, was completely misguided. There may have appeared to be a trend that those with any missing pre-reqs were rejected on the acceptance threads here; however, that just isn’t the case at UCSD.

I’m a senior molecular biology major at UCSD and I’ve met MANY of my peers that transferred missing pre-req as various majors in the department. I know someone that hadn’t even started the lower division physics 1 sequence until their senior year this year. When I was admitted in 2012 when the department was still impacted, I had only completed one semester of o-chem and I know many people that finished various lower division requirements after transferring, meaning they were admitted without those courses competed. I’m sorry you had that impression and were stressed out about it. But maybe you should have called admissions if you thought that was the case and you were destined to be rejected.

I know this is off topic, but do you guys think that Computer Science is impacted for Fall 2014?

@JN1994, no, they aren’t impacted for 2014 transfers, but they will be for 2015 transfers:

Great! That’s what I thought. Thank you so much!

Thanks @ocnative!
