If you have below a 3.0, you won’t get in. They’re expecting more applicants this year than last meaning that there will be another cut off GPA (presuming above a 3.0). Last year they cut everyone off at a 3.0 (unless you had some special circumstance or something)…

You won’t get in with a 2.8. UCSD’s cutoff last year for non-TAG transfers in non-impacted majors was a 3.2. I had a 3.03 and didn’t get in, and UCSD doesn’t do comprehensive reviews, so they only care about your GPA. If anything it’ll go up this year.

Stick around for another year of CC, get that up to a 3.0 and TAG over.

ohh my god i dont wanna do a 4th year of cc -____-
im just gonna have to suck it up and do my best and get an A in either my chem or math class i just got an 89 on my test today so that boosted my confidence a lot to get my 3.0 and get my TAG approved…

oh and grimes will they not eeven care to look at you even if you have a 2.96? (UCSD) im guessing not gaaaah -_____-

@raacheeel: They’ll take a look, but I can almost guarantee you that you won’t be accepted. You gotta look at it this way: admissions get more competitive every single year. This past year, the cutoff GPA was a 3.2. If you had a 3.2 or above, you got accepted (assuming it was a non-impacted major you applied for.) If you had below a 3.2, you were declined (assuming you didn’t have TAG.) I’ve been in constant contact with a UCSD admissions officer and that’s the clear-cut truth of how it happened last year. This year, there will be even more applicants than next year, so I would give you a 99.99999% guarantee that a 2.96 isn’t going to cut it.

Sorry if I’m being too cut and dry, but I hated it when people beat around the bush when I was asking these questions during my transfer process, so here it is :P

My advice? Take some cake walk classes that are UC transferable during the summer. The courses are generally easier and professors are more lenient. You can easily take 3 classes and nail a 4.0 if you go for strictly easy courses.

yeah im doing a lot of easy classes this semester except chem 201 and math 121 i know for sure ill get As in them but i just need one more A to get my 3.0 which is in either chem or math im hoping for either one and they all seem far fetched but im doing my best. i submitted my tag for ucsd so its all or nothing.

Hey guys i have a 2.96 GPA i purposely took really easy classes i don’t need that are UC transferable, so i’m sure i will have a 3.0 by the end of fall and my TAG will be approved. My question is i might be missing 2-3 prereqs by the time i transfer to UCSD. Will my TAG be denied? I’m a bio major and i already know i won’t be able to transfer as that major but thats fine to me as long as i get into the school with another major related to my field.

@raacheeel: If you TAG’d, just get your GPA up to a 3.0 by the end of this (fall) semester. UCSD is calculating your fall GPA into your application.

@Pianocat: You won’t be denied because missing a few pre-reqs, but what are you applying as? If you get denied for your major, you only have one other option to apply for as a “secondary” major, and that must be stated on your initial application.

TAG is worded a little poorly. Yes, you are guaranteed admission to the University, but you are not guaranteed a major. If you apply for two majors and don’t get in to either one, you won’t be attending UCSD in the fall. It’s not like they’ll come to you and be like “hey, you didn’t get accepted for the majors you chose, so do you want to try for something else?”

Make sure that the 2nd major you’re applying for isn’t impacted, because you’ll have a nearly impossible time getting in to an impacted science major with a 3.0.

Nice thank you i didn’t know that, i want to be a bio major and my field of interest is Dentistry. I know i will be denied with a 3.0 GPA as a bio major. what do you think i should major in that is not impacted and is a guarantee i will get in with that major?

Can i major Undeclared? is that good?

I’m thinking about Biochemistry/chemistry as well

You can’t transfer to UCSD on TAG as undeclared; you have to pick a major. I’m assuming biochem/chem are impacted as well, but you’d have to check with UCSD. I don’t know if they fall under the “Division of Bio Sciences.” I would assume they do, but I don’t know for sure.

well raacheeel. I have some good news and some bad news. You’ll finish your IGETC and your major-prereqs. That’s definitely a plus! I spoke to the UCSD rep and she told me that people did get in with 2.8. But you need to be completely safe. STUDY HARD, maintain a 3.0 and you won’t have anything to worry about.

If you get a 2.8, it’s completely up to them to decide. Try hard and make your way to the safe haven!

@totaldj: There are very few exceptions for people who got in last year with GPAs below 3.2s. We had a member on this forum last year who got in with a 2.7 or something, but he had been fighting cancer for years and his app was reviewed by the Dean’s office. The only other time you’ll see lower-GPA acceptances is for strange majors like… East African language studies where the competition is very very low. UCSD doesn’t do comprehensive reviews either, so your GPA is really all you have.

I agree with Grimes my essay better be about something life changing in my life to convince them that id want to better myself and pursue a degree, but yes i do need to maintain my 3.0 GPA, hell just get a 3.0 GPA

btw question: Does admission look at the GPA with non-transferable courses? because if they do its a 3.06! :D, but i doubt it haha

Nope they don’t count non-transferable. Your app only counts transferable courses. Plus, I believe UCSD doesn’t look at your essay, only your courses and GPA.
