Hi everyone! :)
So I have a 3.39 GPA and I'm applying to UCSD as a Sociology major WITHOUT tag. Do you guys think I have a chance? I have all my pre reqs completed. The tag gpa for Fall 2012 is 3.5. Please, any advice is greatly appreciated! THANKS!

I have been accepted to UCSD as a Sociology major with 3.7 GPA with TAG for this Fall. The same case applies to a friend of mine, only except he had 3.2 GPA with TAG. Since TAG doesn’t guarantee the applicant’s choice major at UCSD, I don’t think TAG played any role in our chance of getting into the major. Plus, entering Sociology program is not as hard as bio programs at UCSD. As long as you are in a good academic standing and have completed all your prerequisites/IGETC I think you have a VERY GOOD chance with 3.39 GPA :)

One more thing. When it comes to selecting your college preference, avoid Revelle as your first choice of college at all cost unless you have completed all Calculus and a handful of hard science classes at cc.

Hey thanks! I needed someone to kinda reassure me to relax and know that I have a good chance.
By the way, I’m only missing one course for igetc. Does that ruin my chances? hope not.

hey do you have a 3.39 gpa right now or is that the gpa your expecting this fall, because if its 3.39 right now you have a chance to tag because they look at the gpa after fall.

Hey! That’s the gpa I’ll have after fall. I’ll definitely have a 3.41 for sure. Thanks but 3.4 won’t cut it
Oh and I have one missing igetc. Oh well

In which area of IGETC are you missing one course?

The Biological Science section. Is that bad? I’ve completed every Pre req for my major.

While there is only 2 light prerequsite courses for the major the English and Math part of IGETC is considered to be the most sensitive of all as you already must know.

From my experience, they don’t seem to make a big fuss out of the other areas of IGETC if you are just a few steps away from finishline. I was working on a course in the Social Science area of IGETC and one prerequisite class during Spring and they still sent me an acceptance letter in April anyway although they didn’t even know whether I was going to pass the courses or not. Not surprisingly, they could repeal their decision if I failed to complete everything neatly by the end of Spring. Fortunately, you have 3 semesters to get the last obstacle out of your way until you can safely transfer to UCSD.

You have nothing to worry about but to keep your GPA from being ruined by the end of Spring. :)

Ah awesome Thanks for the advice. I can safely say that I’m not going to be worrying until Admissions are released! By the way, what if I decide not to finish this IGETC course? I heard I can still finish it up at the UC I transfer to.

The reality is, you will have to complete 60 quarter units of upper division courses in order to graduate once you get into UCSD. That will be 15 4-unit classes, the sum of 12 mandatory Soc. major classes and 3 UCSD GEs or electives depending on which college you belong to. You are going to pay more than $3k each quarter, probably up to more than $4k next year, if you are a full-time student taking more than 12 units each quarter. You are not only paying a great portion of grands of university tuition for an uncompleted Bio course for which you could just pay couple hundreds at cc but also impacting your chance of getting a better grades in much more important upper division courses.

Your idea can be a good backup plan only if you can get over the reality :D

Youre right. Tuition is going up. I rather take it at a CC than at a UC and pay more. :)

How’d it go with SD?
