Hey everyone!
I am currently in high school and I’m trying to decide which classes I am going to take in community college to transfer as a Human Biology major to UCSD or a Biology major at UCI. I am very confused about which classes I should focus on taking in order to matriculate easier into either school. My biggest concern is that my major has many prerequisite courses that I need to take, and if i take all of them at my CCC, along with the UC 7 course plan thing that all transfer students need to do to transfer, it totals to be around 69 semester units. However, UCSD’s website says that they strongly encourage all transfer students to complete IGETC. Does anyone have any insight on this? If I do all of my prerequisites for my major I max out my transferable units so I’m not sure how I can do both IGETC and my prerequisites. Someone help!!
Hi Angie,
for courses that articulate between your community college and UCSD or UCI, use assist.org
Moreover, just complete IGETC. Completing IGETC is rather trivial and it guarantees basically any UC you transfer to you will not have to take any lower division general education classes. Your community college should have a Option Plan for transferring to UC’s, which basically is your guide to completing all the classes that is needed to complete IGETC. Just go to counseling office and inquire for it.
Lastly… I am not sure what you mean by when you say maxing out transferable units? I’ve taken over 100 units for math major and I got accepted to every UC. You will transfer to a UC as a junior, as long as you complete IGETC and you complete your major preparation classes… it is really as simple as that lol.
I’m talking about semester units, it says only 70 are allowed. I think I figured it out though, thanks so much!
I had 100 semester units from a community college and am transferring to UC as a junior. Yes, technically you can only transfer 70 semester units to a UC. But the other units will be still counted as credit. You’re definitely overthinking things. @angie101
I’m not sure if it’s overthinking because I didn’t know it would still count as credit
Thanks for explaining that to me that was really helpful because I thought I could only take just 70 semester units and the math wasn’t adding up lol
yeah don’t worry @angie101
Complete IGETC and all major prep for all schools you want to go to.
Moreover make sure you keep a high GPA. STEM majors are very competitive for UC’s.
Here is good data too look at
