hey, Im planning on transferring from a CCC to a UC this year.

My major is computer science. By end of this fall, I will have a 3.5 GPA.

Im hoping to get in to UCSD and UCI, but their major prep are totally different.
UCSD wants Math all the way to Linear algebra. and 2 Calc based Physics
UCI only wants 2 Calculus, 2 comp sci classes, and IGETC.

I can get all the UCI's requirement done, but Im worried about UCSD's major prep.
I know that comp sci in UCSD is not yet impacted, so I dont have to finish all my major prep.
But I heard I will have a better chance of getting in UCSD if I finished it before enrolling.

Heres my situation now:

Im planning on getting my IGETC done in spring, but I will be missing two major prep courses. One in Math(Linear algebra) and One in Physics. I know that UCs will only look up to spring semester for admission , but under the Transfer matrix I found "However, units needed to meet addmission preparation, IGETC or
campus general education requirements will be accepted if taken in the summer". So if I take the two missing major prep in summer, does that mean UCSD will take my summer classes in to considerations for admission?
In the applications, I can put in classes for 2014 summer, so I was assuming they will take it in to considerations?

Please give me advice and chance me :)
Thanks

I think it’s pretty straightforward, you might be reading what you want to see as opposed to taking it literally. It’s basically saying that courses listed during the summer will not be considered for “admission” purposes, but if you elect to complete requirements after being admitted the summer prior to enrolling at UCSD, they will not “throw them out” for lack of a better phrase. You will get credit for them when you’re enrolled at UCSD. So if you list planned major pre-reqs for summer on your UC application they’re going to evaluate you and make their decision as if your courses aren’t there. You’ll be as competitive as someone that’s missing Linear Algebra and Physics and doesn’t plan to take them during summer. However, you can still finish your requirements in summer, it just isn’t going to matter for admissions.

As far as your chances, I admittedly know nothing about CS admissions at UCSD so take my opinion for what it’s worth (not much). But if how competitive UCLA’s CS major is any indicator, I’d guess that UCSD is a small step below that. The fact that UCLA rejected 495 out of 501 applicants to their CS major and UCLA’s average admitted student had a 3.98 GPA indicates to me that CS is very competitive at all mid / upper tier UC’s, especially those with quality engineering departments. And a lot of those rejected UCLA applicants likely applied to UCSD also. I think that even if CS at UCSD isn’t impacted “yet” it’s still likely to be one of the most selective majors at UCSD. If it were any other major at UCSD (save engineering), I think your chances would be great even with two missing pre-reqs. Since it’s likely one of the most competitive majors here, I’d say 30-40%. That number however is completely arbitrary and I could be completely off basis in all my assumptions.

Something else to consider is that IGETC is not a requirement for admission at any of the UC’s. If it’s feasible, it may be worth taking your left over pre-reqs in spring and then finishing IGETC during summer. It would be allowed and you’d still get credit for IGETC, although for admission purposes you it won’t be considered completed.

Thanks for the great response. I will be taking calc 3 and physics 1 during spring, so I need it during summer. Dont really want to wait another year, because next year the major is gonna be impacted. So it would be hard to get it. Hopefully I can get in this time and not waste a year.
