Ucsd > uci?

You Californians and the beach. I’ll never get it.

@munaluna: Im a Californian and I don’t get it. I would much rather be in the mountains or desert.

Whoever said UCI is like a big community college… LOL I totally thought the same exact thing.

UCI… apparently it’s socially dead and I hate the look of the campus. It’s so bleh. Not into the area either.

I love love the SD area. The beach is right there and the city has amazing climate. It’s also apparently socially dead though.

Brain not working…

I would definitely love to go to SD but if we’re considering majors, I would have to pick Irvine because SD has weird ass literature/english majors D:

Haha that was me. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the campus was really nice. The park thing in the middle was huge and awesome to relax in between classes.

But I swear I could hear a pin drop anywhere on campus. Place is dead as can be, even more so than UCSD.

lol i guess all the schools that don’t have the rep as a party is school is considered “socially dead”. Its either one or the other.

I wouldn’t consider UCLA or UCB “party schools” but in the time I spent on those campuses, they’re a hell of a lot more exciting than anything I witnessed at UCI.

^ see thats what i don’t get. what makes uci any different than ucla/ucb (not academics related of course) that makes one seem more ‘exciting’ than the other. Their all institutions with thousands of people, what is the deciding factor of one school being more boring than the other?

What makes one seem more exciting? The atmosphere. My cousin goes to UCLA and I’ve spent numerous weekends there (I used to work past there as well, so I’d stop by on my way back every Friday to kill time.) People don’t drive home after class, they do stuff. If you’re into frats and parties, the whole frat row area is on the other side of a two lane street from the campus dorms. You have downtown Westwood and LA a walk away. Same goes for UCB, although I admit I’ve spent far less time on that campus.

UCI, in the quarter I spent there, had almost nothing going for it socially. The campus itself is dead quiet, almost to an eerie degree, and it’s mostly a commuter school. There’s nothing resembling school spirit.

Contrast that with the first time I visited UCLA: I went to the USC/UCLA football game in December of 2006 when UCLA pulled off the upset. I didn’t get back from the Rose Bowl until almost midnight, then went down to Westwood to grab some food with a friend. People are driving by at 1AM with horns blaring, students are still out screaming and high fiving… you know, “atmosphere.”

UCI is a great school, but boring as can be. UCSD isn’t a whole lot better, but I live here so finding things to do off campus isn’t tough.

@peterr86

I don’t know about Anthropology, but i’m pretty sure the consensus on political science is that UCSD is the better school.

Same ish! There isn’t a huge difference in rankings. Go wherever you’ll feel more comfortable.

I plan on commuting wherever I go so the social atmosphere doesn’t matter to me. I think I’d rather be closer to LA…so UCLA is first choice, then UCI.

Why are you guys saying SD beats Irvine on being close to the beach? Yeah SD is really close but Irvine is no riverside either. It would take MAYBE five minutes to get to state beach at Corona Del Mar. The Newport peninsula is only like ten minutes away.

@Ella89 Good point! UCI is close to Laguna Beach, my favorite beach in California!!

I think when you’re comparing two of the most boring UCs, it comes down to frivolous niceties, lol.

SD:
La Jolla’s lameness
Practically on the beach
San Diegos awesomeness
Great Research opportunities
Awesome gym, with the rimac annex study area overlooking the ocean
tons of pubs on campus with big screens and a fairly nice beer selection
I counted a lot of video game machines and foosball tables
Skateboarding allowed on campus

Irvine:
Irvine’s lameness
Straddles Newport Coast, so it’s very close to the beach
Close to LA, but crappy traffic. SD traffic was nada compared to LA traffic
Nicer housing at VDC
Not as modern a campus. Great park, but lacking decent pubs and the student center looks kinda run down. Price Center is gorgeous.
Great research opportunities
Amazing gym - beats SDs, IMHO

All in all, I’d take SD, I think.

LOL i dont know what to choose between SD and Irvine. I’m still waiting for UCLA tho, which is my number one choice. But if i dont get into UCLA (or USC, #2 choice), then its either UCSD or UCI for me! I’m leaning more towards UCI becuz its closer to home for me. SD is 3 hours away from where I live whereas UCI is like 1 hr 20 mins. And I thought there would be lots of stuff to do around UCi since its next to the OC? Isn’t DISNEYLAND, Angel Stadium, and Anaheim ,etc…only like a 20 min drive away? so theres a lot of stuff to do right there! and isnt newport beach only a 5-10 min drive away? so why are people saying theres nothing to do around UCI? and the kings (NBA basketball) are most likely moving to Anaheim this fall so theres another thing to do 20 mins away! I’d go when they play against the Lakers or Clippers! hahaaha. And i thought UCI would have more school spirit when it comes to sports since they actually compete in DIVISION 1 sports, whereas SD is division 2.

although SD does look like it has the nicer campus and is ranked a bit higher when it comes to academics (tho not by much).

Well im touring UCI this wknd (what can I expect?)…its my back-up school if I dont get into UCLA or USC. maybe i mainly going with UCI over SD becuz its closer to home (LA) for me.

… in my opinion, ucsd><uci and=“” uci<=“”>ucsd.</uci>

and ok, does it matter?

To sum it all down, UCI has a heck of a lot of good asian food nearby

UCSD has the beach.

yheafreak status.

@natjan: I’m from Florida and most of us hate the beach. Sand everywhere, sea lice, shark attacks, no thank you… I can’t stand the beach.

Honestly, San Diego is so boring and has zero culture. I’ve lived on the east coast which has A LOT of rich history and I’ve also lived in Europe. San Diego is probably the most boring and uncultured place I have ever been… And I was even stuck in freakin’ Winnipeg and that place sucks donkey balls (most dangerous city in Canada?!).

It’s so bland here; the people are bland. Oh, nice weather? Who cares. I love storms, autumn, winter, etc. Everyone keeps saying SD has good weather, is that all they have to offer? Because besides that, I ain’t seeing much and I’ve been here for 7yrs.

I’ve noticed that SD doesn’t give a crap about holidays either. So strange to me, because where I’m from, everyone goes all out for all American holidays.

Hopefully Santa Barbara would be better… I’ll probably end up moving to northern Florida near the small beach towns with light houses or Charleston. Can’t take it RN!

@muna

gurl, u hatin so hard right now, i luv it. juss cuz u cant fit in wit a social group in tha westcoast, dont mean u need ta’ get yo panties inna bunch!

WESTCOAST REPREEEEESEEEENNNNTTTT!!! SWAGGGGGGGGG

yheafreak status.

@muna. Where at in in FL are you from? I’m from cocoa beach. I hate the beach too haha.

The thought of having to live in a vapid and sterile place like Irvine gives me the heebeejeebees. You have the rest of your life to reside in dusty urban sprawls dotted with strip malls, populated by nitwits wearing Crocs. If I were you I’d choose UCSD faster than you can say whale’s vagina.

Isn’t that just like that beach but without water and drinks with tiny umbrellas? ;-)
