UCSD\UCLA vs USC?

Hi guys

Are UCs, for instance UCSD and UCLA better than USC? If I can go to any three, would UCLA be the best? I want to be in socal, and i want to major in a field in Business.

Which school?

babumppppppppppppppppppp

for business its USC without a doubt. well undergrad that is. According to USNews, UCLA is ranked 25th and USC is 27th nationally if it makes a difference, but USC’s undergrad business program is ranked 17th and UCLA doesn’t have a business program for undergrads. Both these schools are ranked higher than UCSD although i heard UCSD has a good bio program. They are all good schools, but for business i think USC has the advantage.

since 'SC is the only one of the three with a full undergrad biz program, why is this a question?

what’s the deal with the safety aspect of USC?? i’ve been hearing realllyy bad things about it - thus, knocking it lower and lower on my list. anybody know anything about the crime rate?? despite my attempts at researching this, i have yet to find reliable information

Have you had the opportunity to visit the SC campus? It is located in the heart of Los Angeles, an oasis in a huge metropolitan area. My suggestion is to visit the campus, take the tour and explore SC for yourself.

There is a long thread in the SC forum regarding safety on the campus. Many celebrities send their children there, including the California governor. It is an urban campus, but the university makes every effort to make it as safe as possible. Unfortunately, there is college crime all across the U.S. at both rural and urban campuses. Use the search feature on the forum and read through the thread. Many parents of SC students have posted their comments.

A family member who attended the Univ. of Georgia was beaten terribly walking on a well lighted street immediately across the street from the UGA campus gates in the evening. A gang came around the corner and attacked him when they found he was not carrying any money. That happened in the peaceful town of Athens, GA. In small Auburn, Alabama this fall a freshman student was killed returning to her dorm. Shortly after a young woman from UNC was killed a short distance from that campus. There are newspapter articles as well as campus crime statistics available on the internet.

If you wish to consider the U.S.News rankings the undergraduate Marshall School is ranked 10th. Some programs within the undergraduate Marshall School are highly ranked, especially International Business 5th, Accounting 5th, Entrepreneurship 4th and Real Estate 7th.

Good luck in your college search.

Roy,
U.S. News rankings are subjective and controversial. However, the media does pay attention when these are released. I just doublechecked on the U.S. News website and the undergraduate SC Marshall School of Business was ranked 10th, after a large tie at 6th. These rankings were for the incoming class of 2007.

Uhhh…I hate to pop your bubble here, my friend. But…you need to know something. The UC’s are so overwhelmed with INSTATE applications…its stunning how many they get…that getting in out of state is next to impossible. Especially in these economic times. UCSD is a fabulous school. But it is a TOP choice of most California residents, who used to look at it as a safety if they got dumped by USC, UCLA Cal-Berkeley and Stanford. Now, its almost as hard to get into UCSD as the others, even for in-state kids. OOS, its like…a one in a million chance. They dont have a policy of admitting like 15% from OOS, like Michigan or UNC or UVa have. Go ahead and apply but its a lottery ticket. DO NOT COUNT ON BEING ADMITTED, even if you have uber perfect stats. Sorry, but you need to know.

Its going to be BRUTAL this year. If I were you, I would spend my time looking elsewhere.

Hi again,

Thank you all for the input, I was wondering if financial aid is flexible while applying to USC. The only thing that scares me from going to USC is probably the environment, since UCLA and UCSD seem much more beautiful

USC is a fabulous school and a safe campus, despite the reputation of being in the Watts District of Los Angeles. It has superb academics, a very healthy social life and fabulous national sports. But its HARD TO GET IN THERE, just as hard as the UC’s.

I want to advise you, go ahead and apply to all of them, but its a lottery. If you get in, wonderful, if you don’t its not personal. So don’t count on it. Hundreds of thousands of California high school kids apply to all these schools. And its going to be wicked hard this year, even to private USC.

Good luck. But spread your risk and apply to lots of match schools and safety schools in other states to cover your bases. Otherwise you could get totally hosed.

If you get in, congrats. But DONT get all hung up about going there.

USC is not in Watts, its relatively near it, but then again so is Bel Air. USC has their own security/ police force. I live in the area and there is a hugeeee difference as soon as you walk on the campus. Sure there’s crime, but like it was said, there is everywhere. I wouldn’t let your safety be the deciding factor in your decision to go there or not.

though i wasn’t the person to begin the forum, i’m really interested in USC. (right now i’m torn between USC and Michigan). I was basically trying to figure out PROs and CONs for each, and basically it comes down to poor weather in Mich, and safety issues in USC. not necessarily a “deciding factor,” but in a sense it’s what will make me choose one school or the other. if anybody has any detail (or experience) about either school that’d be EXTREMELY useful to me. thanks!

I live 15 minutes away, go there on weekends to hang out with friends, and work on campus. If you have any questions I’ll do my best to help. :)

We live very near the UCSD campus, in fact my husband and I take walks through there most evenings. It is in a safe area of town, but there have been incidents around campus.

The UC schools are going to be extremely difficult for those applying out of state especially in the current economic times. Many families that we know who have seniors this year and would have previously been able to pay for private university are telling their kids it’s going to be a UC school for them.

We lived in southern California for a number of years and my DH went to USC. Although I wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time at night walking alone in the area near the campus, I was always comfortable on the campus itself. DH lived in an apartment (now demolished) about 2 blocks south of the campus and my car was broken into there when I left it parked on the street at night. Then again, my car was broken into in my driveway in Pasadena, so I’m not sure what that tells you. USC has very good security. Given a choice between the cold of Ann Arbor and USC’s neighborhood, I’d be at USC in a heartbeat.
