UCSD (undeclared) vs Cal Poly Pomona (computer engineering)

Hi,
I was put on the UCSD wait list, but I just got an email saying that I got accepted. I’ve already committed to Cal Poly Pomona as a computer engineering major. I would like to go to UCSD; however, I got accepted as an undeclared major, and I want to be cautious of what I might face in the future if I choose to go SD. I heard about how hard it is for impacted engineering major students to enter the engineering program at UCSD. So, I just want to know what I should do? Should I stay at Cal Poly Pomona? Or should I go as undeclared into UCSD? The cost between the two isn’t a big deal (only 2k more for SD per year than CPP).

A son of my friend got accepted to UCI EE and UCSD undeclared last year. He picked UCSD over UCI. Now He regrets not going to UCI because his GPA at UCSD is not high enough to get into EE.

It really depends on you because getting into engineering is quite difficult especially at UCSD. I mean Computer Engineering is not as impacted or competitive as Bio-medical Engineering at SD but over the past few years UCSD has been going up the ranks on all its STEM fields. Honestly, CPP is a really good school especially when it comes to engineering but of course UCSD gives you the prestige of going to a UC. One thing I can guarantee is that you will not regret going to CPP. Hope you chose what you feel is best.

i think you are better off with CPP in this situation. You can get right into your major and it enjoys a tremendous reputation.

CPP. You might not get into the major you want at UCSD.

UCSD is hiring a lot of professors to meet the demand.

@iCronus I suggest factoring in how much you actually know about what people with degrees in Computer Engineering do. Do you know or have you spoken with those working in the field so that you understand who tends to hire people with these degrees, where the job opportunities are, what the nature of the job is day-to-day and year-to-year? A lot of kids make plans based just on the name of the field and a guess that it might be right for them (eg. law, medicine, computer science, etc) without actually spending much effort into finding out what the career is really right. And that usually works out ok; if they change their mind later, as many do, they can major in something more aligned with their interests. But you face a non-reversible decision here; picking one school probably means forgoing the other forever.

If you knew, from the research you’ve done into the career, that Computer Engineering is really what you want to do then I’d say stay at CPP. On the other hand if you chose Computer Engineering without any strong reason for doing so other than a hunch that maybe its a good field to get into, well, I guess I don’t know what I’d do in your situation.

Thank you for all your opinions on this subject, and I was thinking that I should go to UCSD because I enjoy biology just as much as I enjoy engineering, so If I do not get into the engineering there, then I might study biology at UCSD. Another side question, is it required for students who applied as engineering and got into UCSD to go through the same screening processes and have high GPAs just like undeclared majors?

Probably if it’s impacted major. But I thought from UCSD forum, biology is not an impact major any more. But it could be now. Do check.
