Does anyone have any insight into the admissions stats for students applying to UCSD for theatre (undergrad)? I know the school says they do not accept by major, however, there is an optional video submission for performance in theatre.
My child is a freshman Theater major at UCSD. She was well-qualified (weighted 4.4 GPA, 1470 SAT). She submitted the requested video as well. Although this is only a single data point, I think it’s fair to say that the Theater majors aren’t afforded a whole lot of slack as far as admissions.
@RBurgundy Thank you so much for responding! I figured UCSD was a reach for my D but she went ahead and applied to see what happens. Her UC weighted GPA is only a 3.9 and SAT is 1310 so quite low for UCs.
If my D happens to get accepted, I’d love to learn more about the program. What aspects of the program helped her decide to attend there?
Hello There - my daughter is a freshman double majoring in Theater/- at UCSD and did submit the video as part of her application. She’s having a positive first year -was in a student play this fall and will participate in a spring show. Having a school that is balanced academically and creatively with opportunities to perform was an important part of deciding on UCSD. Check out the La Jolla Playhouse, and Student theater orgs. that add to those opportunities. Good Luck!
Just adding the decision for future researchers. My D was denied but we are not surprised and she seems okay.
@MommaCat Did the decisions for UCSD come out today? If so, was an email sent to the kids to check the portal?
@LamaDrama Yes, came out about 4:30. Not sure if there was an email, but showed up in portal.
My D has 4.42 Weighted GPA, 4.06 Capped GPA, 1340 SAT, Silver Community Service Award (highest for prior to senior year), submitted video, and was admitted.

Congrats! My D was accepted as well to UCSD Theatre BA (Roosevelt College). We have not visited the campus yet. Was waiting on acceptance.
How is the Theatre Dept? Close knit group of kids? Competitive vs supportive vibe amongst the students? Dorms? Food choices? Are your freshman still happy? What don’t they like?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. UCSD is a current “front runner”, price is great
@rebadee hello! I was accepted into the BA theatre program for the class of 2024! I’m trying to get a better feel for the program and just emailed admissions staff trying to get Put in contact with a student. Does your daughter enjoy the layout of the program? Is there any way I could dm her on Instagram or be put in contact with her? I’m desperately trying to gather info on schools that I can no longer visit!
