UCSD v Cal?

Pre-med.
Already SIRed to Cal, but am having doubts. Love SoCal. On the central coast of CA and had no intentions of going North. Really wanted UCLA, got the wait list.
Any thoughts?

In anticipation of someone helping you who knows more than I do about these schools with respect to lower division life, I’ll go ahead and assume that they will probably need some more information about your situation.

Major? Types of activities you would like to be involved in? Is cost/aid a factor for you? And most importantly, since you already SIRed to Cal, isn’t discussing other options a moot point?

Are you sure being pre-med? Did you receive Regents from UCSD? I think having priority enrollment at UCSD trumps Cal and UCLA. From what I’ve read no research for undergraduate at UCB while if you are Regents at UCSD you get research first year.

^It IS possible to do research as an undergrad at Cal, even as a freshman (though not as likely). But if you don’t have Regents, you aren’t guaranteed research; you’ll have to actively seek out those opportunities & there’ll be more competition with others for those few best spots.

If you want advice more relevant to your own situation, we definitely need more info though on what you actually want/plan to do during your undergrad years. “Pre-med” doesn’t indicate anything other than that you need to take a few required courses to be eligible to apply for medical school. But whether you want to do medical-related research, volunteer at a hospital, etc… There’s a ton of stuff that you can do as a “pre-med”.

If you already sent in your SIR, do NOT second guess your decision. If you find you don’t like UCB after one semester(assuming you didn’t totally flunk out), transferring to UCSD may be an option you can consider then.
