Which one is better for undergraduate computer science/computer engineering? UCSD
has a five-year Bachelor's/Master's program which I find really attractive, while USC is more renowned overall...

usc has the same 5 year BS/MS program, called progressive degree program.

Why would you say that? They aren’t that far off in overall rankings, and UCSD is a well respected school nationally.

A long time ago I was accepted to a handful of UCs and USC. When I realized the cost associated with USC and then the realization that USC was in the middle of Compton I opted for a UC. So, my decision was on location. I ended up at UCD, much more my pace of school. I have friends who went to both schools, and both enjoyed their education. Still, So. Cal does something to a person that just ain’t right;)

Thanks for the info guys…but does anyone have an actual opinion regarding which one is better?

USC has the advantage of being more independent from state budget cuts, a large school spirit atmosphere, more unified (see UCSD’s six different colleges, all more or less separated), smaller classes, etc (along with most other typical private school advantages)

UCSD is a great school also, though.

I still don’t get why people say this. I know the neighborhood around USC is a continual point of debate, but USC isn’t in Compton, not even remotely close.

For comparison, USC is almost exactly the same distance from Compton as USC is to UCLA. Yet you never hear anyone say that USC is in the middle of Westwood.

USC more prestige, private. As far as comp sci goes, it’s fantastic.
UCSD has all the drawbacks of a public school. Still highly ranked. People don’t get mugged in La Jolla
