UCSD versus SDSU for Business as a junior/undergraduate

Hi everybody. Just created an account on here. Let me know if I am in the wrong section.

I am at a dilemma here. I have been accepted to SDSU for Business Marketing, and UCSD for International Business.

I am having a hard time figuring out what I want to do because both schools are great. I am worried however, about the need for extra calculus classes, and foreign language. Both of which I have minimal interest in learning. The perspectives on SDSU/UCSD are so polarized it make’s it incredibly hard to decide.

What I know:

UCSD: looks better for employers, top ranking’s.

SDSU: not as good for employers, has top business program, better social life, more compatible demographic, probably not as difficult classes.

I really like the idea of having UCSD as an achievement, but going to a school with a better demographic, more sports, and a more specific business program sounds better to me (SDSU I am talking about here)

Can anyone debunk what I am saying or let me know about other stuff I may be missing? Personal experiences would be great. I have heard of UCSD student’s transferring to SDSU and being relieved.

Is your goal to work in San Diego upon graduation? SDSU grads do very well with SD employers simply because there are so many Aztecs alums around town.

Also, I can only assume a student with the academic chops to get into UCSD will do very well in the business school at State. That’s a long way of saying that you can do well from either school. Lots of people end up choosing SDSU over UCs. Just keep those grades up and you’ll have lots of options for grad school down the road.

Good luck!

I have gotten accepted to just about every school I have applied to in CA. But my issue is figuring out which, SDSU or UCSD, I think is best to attend. As far as staying in SD, I probably will do so post-graduation, or go to the bay area.

@drakeseyebrows - “SDSU: not as good for employers.” This is just not accurate. It has always been a pleasure to work with Aztec interns and graduates. In my area, SDSU students are sought after for internships/jobs, and their alumni are a definite force in my industry.

1 in 7 college graduates in San Diego County are Aztecs, but we do have a presence throughout the country, not just in San Diego. My fellow graduates are mayors, politicians, CEOs/Executive Directors, doctors, dentists, business owners, award-winning writers/actors/directors/producers, scientists, professors, athletes, Olympians, teachers, principals, inventors, researchers, nurses, developers, engineers, entrepreneurs… and the list goes on and on. I recently went to an event honoring 40 incoming SDSU seniors. The audience was absolutely in awe of these students accomplishments, both in and out of the classroom. The scientific/medical/technical research that many of them have done was amazing.

I remember at my child’s SDSU orientation a couple of years ago, one of the deans said something like this, “If you want to sit and just study for four years that is fine, and you’ll get a diploma. But, if you want to make an impact, then get involved, throw yourself into your classes, meet your professors, and be active on campus, and you will have a life-changing experience here.” Both SDSU and UCSD are wonderful schools, and you will be fine whichever one you choose. Just pick the one that will make your heart happy academically, financially, socially, and opportunity-wise.

@Fish125 wow thank’s for the write up. I only said that comment above because that’s what people have told me. That UCSD looks better on a resume than SDSU. But of course we know the biggest thing on a resume is the experience for said job.

I am leaning towards SDSU. Cheaper, beautiful women/people, great business program, etc. Also may look into their fraternities and business clubs.

@drakeseyebrows - Thank you for your kind response! Truthfully, I’ve never had anyone run from my resume when they see that I attended SDSU, and in nearly 30 years, I’ve been hired at nearly every job I’ve wanted. And, if you follow basketball like I do, there’s nothing better than watching a game with 12000+ screaming fans at Viejas Arena!

Congratulations on being accepted to both universities!! You can’t go wrong at either of them (and my kid chose SDSU over UCSD and UCLA, and has never regretted it.)
