I have to make my decision between UC San Diego (Sixth College-Management Science) & UC Irvine soon. I have heard a lot of negative feedback about UCSD–that everyone has no social life, they all compete, and that the people are just straight up mean. Can anyone offer up some advice about these comments or the schools in general ? It would be greatly appreciated.

well, mangement science is really not a great major...sorry but my cousin was graduated from UCSD with that major, and he cound't even find a job...

"Can anyone offer up some advice about these comments or the schools in general ? It would be greatly appreciated."

Really the best thing to do would be to go there. Talk to 100 differnt people and you'll get 100 different stories.

If you trust the people you're getting feedback from, my advice would be to choose UCI over UCSD. You won't do well if your not happy; you won't be happy if you don't expect to be.

I have heard the opposite.

RE: Social Life
You can have one if you want one. And if you really want to party it up, you can go to Tijuana or something.

RE: Competition
Although, the sciences are pretty tough, I've heard that UCSD students are more chill than UCLA students and not as competitive. You know, like they're not crazy.

RE: meanness
I've heard the total opposite. I hear everyone at UCSD is nice. :)

BUt yes, I've heard their management sciences program...not so good.

P.S. I got into Sixth too! :)

Thank you, that helps a lot. I actually heard that the Management Science program was close to Berkeley
s Business program. Maybe that
s wrong ? Where
d you hear that ? Major
s aren
t exactly the definition of one
s success I personally think, but I don
t know...I know I
ll be okay no matter what. I was actually thinking about switching to majoring in Biology. I
m between studying medicine and business--not exactly sure what to do. This is probably off topic with this thread, but does anyone know if it
s easy to make the switch considering bio is impacted ?

i heard it's rather difficult to switch into a impacted major...but you can definetly try - good luck

it is actually impossible to switch to an impacted major

last i heard, someone said that ucsd is un-impacting certain majors

i'm sure it's not impossible. just near impossible. :P you'll need to keep a really high GPA, that's for sure and you might have to wait a year or two.

You can major in management science and still be pre-med. There is no such major as pre-med. Just make sure you take the prerequisites for med school, and prepare properly for the MCATS.

management science?! are you trying to be a bureaucrat? for that uci seems better i heard. UCSD is nicer though atmosphere wise, beaches, people, small college system, library etc. UCSD has better rankings too academically.

These days management science would not be a bad idea for an MD. There is so much to learn about efficiently running a practice that the knowledge would be great to have. Also you could have a future in hospital administration.

Yea i think you have it totally wrong about competition at UCSD. It's really not at all. I mean, it's very challenging (coming from a comp sci major), but there's nothing cut throat out there.

aw I made a thread about switching to impacted majors...I emailed them and they said it's absolutely impossible to switching into impacted major such as biotech and bioe. The only way to get those impacted majors was if you got in the first time you applied for ucsd. (freshmen applicant/transfer)

@ ILoveLarkin : Seriously? I have a friend trying to get into Bioinformatics and he has to take the classes and maintain a certain GPA in order to get in. Did they really tell you straight out that it is impossible, or that it was difficult?

This is the first time I've heard such bad things about Management Science. Can anyone expand on why it is no good?

@M1SS C0LEE: What would you study at UCI?

Yeah, this is the first time I`m hearing so many bad things about management science at UCSD too. Is this just a rumor or does anyone have solid evidence for it ? Anyway, to answer your question, if I go to UCI, I was planning on majoring in Economics and minoring in Management.

That sounds like a solid combo. You may want to do some research to see if the normal Econ at UCSD is better (or not) than the Econ at UCI. Also, I have only heard good things about a mix of Math and Econ... As collegemom16 can probably agree with... there are signs that math is hot right now.

For me, I applied to UCSD Management Science because I wanted to study the closest thing to business at good school that was near me... but now, I am thinking about going to UCI because they offer programs that just aren't available at UCSD - plus, MS isn't really business, so why am I trying to convince myself it is? However, it is interesting that people are actually saying that MS is a bad program. For some reason I think the are hollow claims.

So what do you REALLY want to do? You are jumping from management science, to business, to econ, to biology... it's kind of across the board there. What do you see yourself doing after you graduate?

Specifically what programs are you talking about that are available in UCI and not UCSD ? As you can see, I am still not entirely sure what I wanna do. All I know is that it
s between medicine and business. Either way, I definitely know I wanna eventually pursue graduate school. I think I
m gonna get a feel for the classes first before committing to one way or another. If it`s business, I was thinking finance/managerial/international business-related.

I
m going to do some research on the economics programs in both UCI and UCSD. I know that the Management Science major in UCSD is primarily based around economics classes and calculus/math classes. I
m not sure I wanna go to UCI as an economics major if ALL my classes will be only based around that.

I also read that business week article when it came out. Pretty interesting...

what article?
