Hey everyone, so I was admitted into UCSD and Sacramento State (where I live nearby). My end goal is to be able to sit for the CPA exam. I was wondering if it would benefit me at all to attend UCSD as an Econ major with an Accounting minor instead of just attending Sac State as an Accounting major. Keep in mind that I do have to fork over ~$12k a year for UCSD. UCSB and UCI probably would have fit me better, but sadly, I didn't get in to either. Any advice would definitely help in my decision, thanks.

Has anyone also heard about the rigor of either the econ or the accounting courses at UCSD, btw?

The accounting program at UCSD is still new and the big 4 don’t recruit there yet. I don’t know about Sac state so can’t tell ya anything about that. You could probably get a nice internship with the IRS tho since it is near there.

If your goal is to pass the CPA Exam it would make a lot more sense to attend a university that offers a degree progam with a major in Accounting than it would to go to one where you would be an Economics major with a minor in accounting.

^
You take the same amount of accounting classes with a minor or a major. Instead of taking econ/math courses you will be taking business classes in an accounting major. The test really depends on your study skills not so much about your major.

Honestly the most important thing is to go to a school where PUBLIC accounting firms are. Your CPA license requires work experience and if no public accounting firms are recruit on campus then it will be difficult to get that experience (IRS counts as PA if you are wondering).
