UCSD Vs. SJSU

I have been admitted to both UCSD and SJSU for Computer Science program as a Fall 2014 transfer student.

Which one do you think is a better school for Computer Science ? I know in terms of ranking and reputation UCSD is way beyond SJSU. But my concern is the internship opportunities. I think if I go to SJSU I might be able to get the internship a lot easier since it's located at the heart of Silicon Valley. On the other hand, I am afraid that SJSU is not as reputable as UCSD and therefore will hurt my chance in the long run for getting a full time position or even continuing to graduate school.

Also, can somebody explain what's the difference between colleges at UCSD? I heard many times that for a transfer student it's only a matter of GE's. Say my friend go to Warren, and I go to Marshall, will we be able to take CS classes together ? Or are the CS classes different for different colleges ?

I am far from an expert but since you have no replies I will give it a shot.

UCSD will offer better prospects for a full time position and graduation school. In particular if you are considering graduate school you should choose a research university. (UC)

You should read the requirements for each college but it really is just different GEs (and on campus housing). Your college will have nothing to do with CS classes.

UCSD is abounding in tech/cs internships and jobs. You should do some googling for companies in the area because SD has a large military presence as well. As such, big companies such as Qualcomm, Broadcom, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, UTC Aerospace etc are all located fairly close to the school… and those are just the ones I can name off the top of my head because they’re where my friends have interned as 2nd/3rd years.

^Those are mostly defense companies, I would stay away from them if you can help it, they like to hire young engineers and then discard them when they get older. If you don’t have anything then take them but they are not something to aim for. Broadcom and Qualcomm are mostly hardware companies that are appropriate for Computer Engineering.
For CS, I think I saw Google, Facebook, Apple, Accenture, Amazon, etc… on the career fair.

Thank you for your opinions @FarWest & @heartarrow. @DrGoogle, I agree those are hardware companies which will most likely hire a computer engineering student. Did you say those major companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, Accenture, Amazon, etc… were on the career fair at UCSD? What do you think about SJSU? I know it’s nice to dream to land an internship in any of those companies, but reality is if you’re not super extraordinary then you will not probably pass the first round of interview. In that case, maybe the most realistic thing is to find an internship at small start-up company which I believe to be the advantage of living in San Jose.

I think the better opportunities will come from the better university. UCSD is fantastic in CS. Even before you have are skilled enough to get an internship you may get involved in research which is also very nice for the resume.

@BrownParent you’re definitely right. My parents also suggested me to go to UCSD because it’s a better school. But yeah maybe I was too skeptical since UCSD was my back up school. and it always reminded me of how I was not good enough for Berkeley :’) Do you know any friend that land an internship over the summer of his/ her junior year at UCSD? I really want to have that kind of experience, but I’m afraid San Diego isn’t the place for small startup CS companies which more likely to hire me rather than those major companies

Are you saying you think there are no Jrs who get internships in UCSD? Seriously? I just get so depressed when I hear mindsets like yours. Back up school, only jobs are in SV, all that.

My daughter does know of someone who was hired freshman year as an internship with a big local hardware company. I’m not a liberty to name them, but I think this person goes through connection.
@pushandpop,
Did you know the #1 Facebook employee graduated from UCSD, he went to Paly. Vice President of Engineering at Twitter went to UCSD. The 2 guys that helped Steve Jobs built the Macintosh graduated from UCSD. From what I’ve heard on the net, Amazon hires UCSD grads but bypass UCLA(not sure whether to believe it or not). And I believe the TA group manages the cloud for Google so there are tons of alumni that graduated from UCSD. I know for the Bay Aera, everybody believes the myth that UCB students are the top but I once rejected a few, mostly transferred students to UCB. They did not have the basic understanding of a certain things and that’s all I checked. But you should check the career fair at UCSD to be sure.

http://career.ucsd.edu/alumni/alumni-survey/actual-jobs-by-field-technology.html

Furthermore, I want to add that if you have a linkedin account you can check to see that UCSD top employer is Google and so is UCB. While it’s not the same as UCLA, probably because UCLA is near the aerospace hub, mostly defense companies in LA.

@BrownParent sorry for being offensive, I truly didn’t mean anything. It was a pure question out of curiosity because I’ve never been to San Diego, so I am not familiar with the surrounding area. Forgive me for my ignorance. Maybe I’ve had too much confidence all this time, I truly deserved my rejection from Berkeley. Now I’m grateful that I’ve been accepted to UCSD and see it differently. I’ve already submitted my SIR to UCSD, so I’m pretty much going there ! And I’m so excited about that

@DrGoogle Thanks for the links, I appreciate it. Are you by any chance affiliated with Google? you said you rejected a few? I totally agree with what you said that not all UCB students are the best, especially transfer students. I can quickly name some people off the top of my head who are not smarter than me but went to Berkeley because they’re good at shopping classes and too good at cheating. Please don’t get me wrong UCB fans if you’re reading my post, I believe there must be a lot more outstanding students at Cal, but those people I mentioned are truly exist. And I love Cal ! It’s just they didn’t offer me admission

No. I was the chief technical person for hiring people out of college when I was working in the Bay Area.
But yeah I went I took a class at community college, there was a lot of cheating and the teacher didn’t catch all of these cheaters. However, all these cheaters wanted to go to UCB, what for?

@DrGoogle Yes, that is very true, if only the admission officers could see that ! But, they’re humans after all
