UCSD Vs. UCD (Economics)

Hi, I’m a first year California CC transfer student who got into UCSD (Muir) and UC Davis for economics. Both schools seem great, and there isn’t much of a difference ranking wise.

Could you guys give me some pros and cons for both schools. Any specifics regarding each others economics department would be great.

I know UCSD is know for STEM and research, but I’m more concerned with getting a job after I graduate (business/finance, NO accounting).

I’ve read that UCSD social life isn’t that great, but you just have to put more effort into it whereas everyone at Davis is friendly and the school is a college town.

One con is that I have to take Calculus 3 for UCSD over the summer, and I’m not a huge fan of math. I know a lot of my upper division classes will be filled with math for either school.

I also got into UCSC for business management economics and the Regents scholarship (10,000 for 2 years), however money isn’t a huge concern and I’ve only heard negative things about the school.

Again any insights are GREATLY appreciated.

Also, I don’t need to do any GEs because of IGETC

@Tustlop Hi! Did you have a chance to visit both before quarantine? Go with your gut on which school environment seemed to be the better fit for you. I wanted to make a comment about you “not being a big math fan”. Do you have an idea of your long-term career goals? Just know that sooooo many people end up in “business” without an economics degree. There was plenty of majors that are less math-heavy that would prepare you for a variety of roles in sales, marketing, advertising, consulting, etc (Comminications, Sociology, Psychology, etc.). Major in something you’re interested in and where you’ll find success, and choose the school that’s the best fit for you. Good luck ?

UC Davis is the better choice overall but also for economics (they consistently have been ranking higher than UCSD these past 2 years). I know some people have gone to LSE for grad after undergrad at UCD and have heard better things about the program at UC Davis than at UCSD.
