UCSD vs. UCI

Hi, so I got into UCSD as an environmental systems major, and UCI as an environmental engineering major(I’ll switch to Mechanical Engineering if I decide to attend). I am having trouble deciding between the two schools because UCSD is a much more prestigious school, but the environmental systems major itself is only 11 years old, while Engineering seems like a much more solid major.

I know that it is POSSIBLE to switch to engineering major after like the first year at UCSD, but it is not guranteed, so I am really hesitant.

As a career I want to be involved in helping solve sustainability issues and I heard that you can do that as a mechanical engineer(for example making solar panels, wind turbines, etc.) and engineering really just seem much more of a safer career path.

If any of you guys can give me tips, that would be great.
Thanks!

I think engineering at UCSD beats UCI, some majors are impacted but not sure Mechanical Engineering is one of them. Go visit both campuses and see which one appeals to you more.

My apologies, I meant to say that I will switch to Mechanical if I go to UCI. And engineering majors at ucsd are impacted so there is no guarantee that I will be able to switch to engineering.

I have visited both campuses, and I think they are both good, and both had equally its cons and pros.

If I’m sure I am going to grad. school, should I choose UCI?
Or is UCSD worth it to take the risk of not being able to switch into engineering?

I read that if you didn’t get into engineering UCSD it’s harder to transfer in. Not sure if all engineering majors are impacted at UCSD. I think it depends on the GPA at UCSD. It’s tough decision. Good luck making it.

Actually, I found some useful link from CC that might help you making decision. It seems like it’s easier to take classes in impact major, you are not blocked out.
