Okay, I got accepted into UCSD and UCLA for an undergraduate psychology major, but recently I've realized I'm more interested in neuroscience. My question is, which school is better for switching over. UCSD offers a BS, where as UCLA does not...but UCLA has such a selective psych department that it makes me not want to give this oppurtunity up. However, am i totally screwing my future chance of geting into neuroscience if I stick with a BA in pyschology? HELP!

Also, what are your thoughts about each school in general?

Both UCSD’s and UCLA’s Psychology programs are nationally ranked and both are outstanding options.

Since you are interested in possibly switching over to neuroscience, UCSD would just be 1 click away. UCLA on the other hand, will give you A LOT of trouble.

In my opinion, head south to San Diego. It may not be “UCLA”, but your neuroscience degree from UCSD would help you out a lot more (since you want to get in that field) rather than a UCLA Psychology degree.

I am also trying to decide between the two! It’s a tough choice huh? I’m not really interested in the neuroscience degree, but am going for the BS in s Psych if I do go to SD. I know it’ll be hard to pass up on going to UCLA though…

I talked to one of the Psych professors at my community college and he told me he was going to look into the Psych departments at both the schools, ask around, etc… so if that is possible for you to do, that is another good resource…

LA wont let you switch into neuroscience im pretty sure, and SD probably will, also SD is one of the best schools in the nation for neuroscience, its program actually far exceeds that of UCLA.

Wow thanks for the input guys. Now to add on to my question, would it a BA in pyschology from UCLA allow me to go premed for neurology (to yale or stanford etc…) or would I still be screwing myself over? I know my questions are all over the map, I just want to make sure I’m keeping my options open.

you can go into med school WITH ANY undergradutate major (english, women’s studies, history, economics, you get the point), in fact that actually give preference to those who major in a non-science and do well on the MCAT, because it shows that the student is more well-rounded and versatile.

Oh wow! Im in the same exact dilemma!! Psychology major for both. Im not too sure if I want to even keep my major as psychology …I was thinking of leaning towards humanities of social sciences. It seems like both schools are similar in ranking. But would graduate schools more likely acccept. Someone from ucla rather than ucsd??

I would take the BS degree if you’re not planning to go to a grad school. But if you’re planning to go on, I don’t think it matters which you choose. Neuroscience = definitely B.S degree, if you plan on going the Med school career (if you fulfill the prereqs for med school, it won’t matter which major your choose however).
