UCSD vs. UCSC

Hello, I honestly don't know which school I want to go to. I got into UCSD and UCSC. I visited all the campuses but I live in San Diego and I am getting heavily pressured by my family to go to UCSD, but to be honest, I want to get out of here! I am majoring in Biology/Biological Sciences so, obviously, UCSD is my better bet, however I intend to go to medical school and you need a really high GPA, so UCSD is likely to be more competitive and as much as I hate saying this word, but harder... UCSC is a beautiful campus, and I feel like I fit in more because of the environment and the "hippies", but I feel as if it's not prestigious enough, and that I worked too hard to end up in an "easy" school, yet they have the Academic Excellence program- in which I can get smaller classes, better access to professors, and help if I need it. Besides that, they are offering me a $6,000 scholarship so I would only have to take out a $2,000 loan. Can someone please kinda help me out?!

Also would it look better to have like a 3.8 GPA in Santa Cruz compared to a 3.4 in UCSD?

If you really want to be successful go to UCSD!! I go to UCSC and it is a joke!! Honestly you will benefit more from a CC if you are looking for an actual education. UCSC is a place that hires all the people no other UC would hire and offers huge pensions to the few famous profs. that we have here. The only thing UCSC ever did was map the genome a few hours faster than the other people trying it at the same time. Honestly, for $70,000+ no matter how much of a hippie you are this place won’t help your career. UCSC could care less about you, unless you forget to send in your 12,000+ a quarter.
UCSC is a lace where you can talk to ten people, all the way up the chain of command , and still the most common answer you will get is “I don’t know.” The facilities here are old, the new ones are built to the lowest legal standards, the staff are not very friendly, and student life is pretty lame, unless you are Asian, Black, Hispanic, or LGBT they are the ones the University gives all the money to. UCSC sucks I wish I would have picked another school and would not have wasted my time here, don’t make the same mistake do what you love to do and do not let UCSC destroy your future.

There is a shortage of room on campus, so no matter what the University tells you, the classes you want will probably fill up before you are allowed to enroll, even if your major is not severely impacted.

Well, the above poster definitely has an opinion.

If you want to go to med school, a higher GPA is a higher GPA. You might have a better chance getting in from UCSC. And it’s a gorgeous campus. All the students I know there love it.

Better program, higher GPA, prestige, hippies, bla bla bla…bottom line is both schools are top 100. You should go where you’ll be happier and more likely to succeed.

perform Very well at either UCSD or UCSC and you will get identical offers for med school…

go with your ideal fit…it is for FOUR years for goodness sakes…UCSC is one of the most beautiful campus’ in the world…

Peace :)

I think it’s a great idea to get away and try another place from your hometown. You need the space to connect with your school’s community and live on your own, not worrying about meeting up with family all the time. You can do that via internet, skype and all. Saving loan money isn’t anything to scoff at either.
