UCSD vs UCSC

Hello. This is my first post!

I'm planning to apply to either UCSD or UCSC with TAG this summer.

I want to begin classes in January 2010, and both UCSD and UCSC offer a Winter TAG. (So do UCI, UCR, and UCM, but I'm not really interested in them.) The rest of the UC's (UCB, UCLA, UCD, and UCSB) are not open for Winter.

So that brings me back to UCSD and UCSC. I'm undeclared at my CCC, but I'm interested in the humanities and am considering a Lit major. I'm a little worried about going to UCSD since it's known to be very science-heavy. I know it's a very good school, but does anyone have any knowledge of the quality of the humanities there? Would I be foolish to go there for Literature (or even a social science)? UCSC might be the better option, strictly in terms of major. How do the humanities/social sciences stack up at UCSC?

UCSD and UCSC could hardly be more different from each other, as far as I can make out, but I'm having trouble deciding between them.

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I go to UCSD, and yes, it is very science-math-oriented, and they're known for their strong science-based programs.

I wouldn't know too much about their literature/humanities departments, but I'm currently enrolled in my required 5-course humanities sequence, and it's pretty rigorous..

If you want to, you can take a look at our syllabus/required course readings if that'd help you determine UCSD's expectations/rigor in humanities:

Humanities - Home Page

Thank you Radiance!

That was helpful. UCSD's Lit major is actually more involved than the other UC's (particularly its literature in a second language requirement). Again, if anyone has any undergrad experience in UCSD humanities, I'd love to hear what you think! There must be a handful of Lit majors, right? :)

if ur a tree hugger, go to ucsc

ucsc has a secondary literature requirement aswell, but only if you do the "literature intensive major", which is designed to prep for grad school.

I've heard better things about UCSD's lit program and school in general. UCSD is beating UCSC in rankings, I believe. Plus, San Diego has more to offer as a city than Santa Cruz (yes the bay area is close to SC, but highway 17 sucks).

I agree with the other comment, if you're a tree hugger, SC will be the fit. If you surf, either will be great, but you'll need your we suit less in SD.

Or a tree smoker ;)

true dat lol
ucsd is far above ucsc in terms of national rankings though

I recently found out that UCSC won't be accepting any students Winter 2010 after all! (blame the budget crisis) :(

So UCSD it is! I think I'll choose another major though. The 2nd language requirement would do me in (I know a laughable amount of Spanish and French).

Heh. Just another 10 months till classes start!

Wait, wait, wait! Where did you hear that UCSC isn’t accepting Winter '10 transfers?? :(

^^ My academic counselor told me that UCSC will be closed to transfers Winter quarter. That was about a month ago, and after reading your post I thought I’d double check. I called the Office of Admissions and it turns out that they “won’t know until June.”

yea to add to that i just spoke to a uci rep and she said they wont know until june. its because winter transfers are only when they didnt fillup all the spots that they wanted to for fall. when june comes around they know how many people are coming in the fall, and from there they see waht they have available for winter.

but she said uc’s don’t get paid for overenrollment this year, so winter openings this year will be much more limited then ever before
