UCSD vs UIUC electrical engineering

what do you guys think about uc san diego vs u illinois urbana-champaign in terms of EE

I dont know too much but I do know that UIUC is very highly regarded in EE...

Definitely UIUC EE unless you're getting in-state tuition for UCSD.

While US News Rankings dont mean too much, UIUC is ranked #4 and UCSD is ranked #14 for electrical. And for overall engineering, UIUC is ranked #5 and UCSD is ranked #25.

I think overall UIUC has more prestige as an engineering school anyway, but UCSD is a good school too, so its really not that big of a deal.

They're in dramatically different settings... might want to consider whether you prefer cornfields or beaches, too. Both have good engineering schools and would provide you with good opportunities and a good education. Find a place you'd feel comfortable living in for four years.

UIUC hands down....

Absolutely UIUC... UIUC EE is one of the best..

It's ranked. It has prestige. It's not the best place for everyone, though.

I would choose UCSD based on location.

again UIUC hands down...

I would NOT choose UCSD simply because I've visited it and don't like the environment at all (I live in CA), but if you've seen/heard enough about both campuses, it doesn't really make that much of a difference. UCSD is catching up really fast in engineering, and it's on its way to become one of the top in the nation.

uh self exlpanatory i think
<<<<<
But yeah choose based on the location and financial aid.

yea i'm in socal, ucsd is like 11k/year after grants/workstudy UIUC is like 43k/year

Definitely UCSD

omg, this forum is so biased here... definitely UIUC EE... no doubt... Especially, if you are really interested in more research area, you must go to uiuc..

Have any of you actually been to Urbana-Champaign...? I lived there for two years during my grad work. If you're not into small-town midwest whatnot, you're going to be miserable.

Compare being miserable and 120K in debt with going to a still-top-tier university in a large city in Southern California with significantly less debt.

There's no "must". You don't have to go to UIUC, even if you want to do research. You'll get excellent opportunities with either university. If you've visited Urbana-Champaign and love it and are willing to deal with the type of debt that you would incur there (which is LARGE! 120K is BIG DEBT!) then consider it. If you're not interested in living in rural Illinois where the only thing around is the university, then you need to take that into account. You will not be horribly penalized for attending UCSD as others imply... It's a good school, and you would get a good education there.
