Hi. I'm a senior from California trying to decide between umichigan and ucsd. I will most likely be an English major or something humanities related and want to do pre-med. I also got into to Mcgill but don't really want to go as far away as Canada. I also really like the idea of the residential college program. Could you please help with the pros and cons of these two schools. I got a scholarship for Michigan so the cost is pretty much the same for both schools. Thanks!

Well, Michigan is a really good school. Probably slightly better than UCSD academic wise, but UCSD location and weather is the best – hands down. Academically, I don’t think you can go wrong either way, but I think this one is gonna come down to preference. Also, Michigan has a very good social atmosphere, because of their D1 sports. It’s all you on this one, bud.

You might want to check the rankings on english departments, but I do know that almost across the board, UMich pwns UCSD in everything (Except bioengineering hah)
However, if you’re going pre-med, I can’t think of any tangible benefits of going to a (public) school that is just higher ranked than another one, it’s all about how YOU perform there.

More about my perspective, I am in the same situation as you (except pre-med or engineering), but I didn’t get any UMich scholarships, so it’s dastardly expensive for me to go there

do you mind the cold? if you dont like snow go to ucsd.

its 75 degrees all year long… why wouldnt you go to ucsd?

“I also really like the idea of the residential college program.”

You do know that Michigan has a residential college program too correct?

Interesting this came up, I am from Michigan, going to a university on the west side of the state, and pre-med. Rankings aside, the main aspect I finally realized is opportunities for research and getting into medical school. If you’re serious about attending medical school, you truly need to be very strategic with your academics, and that includes where you attend. I am transferring to one of the UC’s next year, potentially UCSD, after going to school in Michigan for 2 years. It was easy to compare U of M to all the UC’s after I visited California last year. You have a better opportunities to get into some of the best medical schools in the world in California. There’s a very unique and innovative sense of education at the UC’s, which attracts the best faculty and some the most cutting edge research. My mom would kill me for bashing her alma mater, but go to UCSD.

Also, the weather really does SUCK. Right now it’s snowing and like 30 something. Crappy winter weather definitely affects my school performance, all I want to do is sleep and stay inside!
